Although social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat can help people keep in contact among a lot of other positive things, there are a lot of negative causes and effects of using social media. Some of those negative causes include: being obsessed with being famous on social media, cyber-bullying, using another person’s picture as his or her own, becoming addicted to social media, and many other things. Although some of those things listed above seem minor compared to others, the outcome of those habits will have negative effects in the future. Even though there are many benefits of using social media, it has a lot of negative causes and effects because it makes it easier for the real monsters (those who cyber-bully and those who pretend to be someone they are not) and for people to lose sight of the real …show more content…
Wanting to be famous on social media in itself is not a bad thing because almost everyone has wanted to be famous at one point in their life, but being obsessed with becoming famous on social media will have unfavorable outcomes in the future. One unfavorable outcome is buying followers or likes because doing so can cause people to be so obsessed with having a lot of followers or likes that they will spend a lot of their money on increasing their popularity rather than necessities. Another negative outcome is doing something that a person normally would not do to gain popularity on social media. For example, a lady might find that it is easier to gain popularity by posting obscene photos and videos. Although it may be easier to gain popularity faster by doing so, once a person posts something on the internet it cannot be undone. Besides being obsessed with being famous on social media, another negative cause of social media is cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is one of the biggest negative causes of social media. People of all age groups use
Social Media does have a negative influence on middle school students because it causes anxiety and depression. To be precise, a study showed by the article Being 13: Perils of lurking on Social Media displayed that half or kids say they feel excluded on social media. A girl interviewed on the article, explained that she takes 100 selfies until she able to accomplished the right photo she likes. In other words, she takes 100 selfies to make herself look pretty so she won’t be judged negatively, which corresponds to the study done by CNN. According to a study done by CNN,
Continuing from Probst’s article, she mentions a few negative qualities of social media, including: being addictive, making people compare their lives with others, causing restlessness, giving rise to cyberbullying, and inducing peer pressure. While scrolling through social media, users tend to see images of people on adventures or of people spending time with numerous friends. As the users view these images, they cannot help but to compare their own lives to those who appear to be having more fun, and they may think less of their own lives. Another problem that is arising through social media is cyberbullying. A survey was conducted showing that 95% of youths have witnessed cyberbullying (Probst). Not only is the effects of cyberbullying harmful to mental health, but it is very difficult to stop this type of bullying because it often happens behind closed doors; a private message is sent and can only be viewed by the sender and receiver. An online questionnaire created by Helen Gore and Catriona Morrison shows the correlation between depression and internet addiction and they were able to conclude that internet use is causing people to have more depressive tendencies. Depression is a difficult issue to deal with and can leave many feeling alone and vulnerable. As users of media, we should be aware of the unfortunate side-effect of
Social media proves time and time again that it can be a very successful tool for helping to grow and expand a business, when used correctly. However, there are many limitations to using social media that need to be taken into consideration. One of the limitations is that companies struggle to determine how their social media platforms are generating sales and profits based on their likes and followers. The ability for a company to identify a concrete methodology to evaluate the success of their social media programs is difficult for most companies and even though who had invested time and resources into assessing this key performance indicator still understand that the methodology used is not necessarily providing them with concrete impact (Sandilands, n.d.). Due to the fact that it takes time for the likes and followers to grow and form a substantial

“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
Today, social media is used in extreme amounts by millions of people. Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are all sites that allow people to converse, exhibit their life, and speak their minds. There is a point where this freedom of communication should be controlled. Bullying exists on several of these sights and only does more harm than good. This harm should be limited and controlled. John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher who redesigned utilitarianism to fit a more sophisticated age. In his book, “Utilitarianism”, the moral system is defined as “[t]he creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or the Greatest Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...
Social media has nothing but negative effects on people’s minds. Social networking can become very addicting and people can get wrapped up in the drama and excitement of the cyber world. It is known that youth are positively affected with the benefits of social media in connection with positive behavioral outcomes. Several studies have mentioned a number of benefits that a youth receives out from being a social media user. There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.

With the way the world is now it should not be a surprise to anyone that social media has literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). These numbers just show what Facebook and Twitter have accomplished. Other social media sites that are getting more and more popular are Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Pinterest, and many others social media websites that people use on a daily basis.
