With the way the world is now it should be no surprise to anyone that social media has very literally taken over the world in this day and age. From late 2008 to early 2009 the size of Facebook users doubled from 100 million to 200 million in eight months, and was already up to 400 million by early 2010. Twitter also raised its number of users in 2009 from 4.5 million to 20 million (Zandt). With a few clicks of a button or taps on a screen, a person can be connected to family and friends in every corner of the world and even see what their favorite celebrities are doing with their lives.”Social media defines an array of internet sites that enable people from all over the world to interact. Yes, the social media websites that are supposed to bring families and friends closer together also give some people their worst nightmares. “Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyberbullying in which the perpetrators anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers” (Jung). Because these predators can hide behind fake names, profile pictures, and information they are able to get away with basically whatever they want. Meaning they can get away with bullying people without having any consequences brought upon them. Social media accounts can be deleted, usernames can change, and many other things that can make these predators somewhat untraceable. Because of this, people all over the world end up committing suicide or at least trying to commit suicide since these incidents can end up causing emotional damage to them. According to a 2010 CBS news report 42 percent of youth reported that they had been victims of cyberbullying (Jung). That means that just six years ago just a little under half of the youth that had been using social media were being cyberbullied. One can only assume then, that the numbers of people who are victims of cyberbullying have risen even higher than that. This is a big issue that needs to be solved, and might be the biggest problem with using social media
