There has always been a controversy as to whether social media is changing family relationships. Because of the increase in technology use and social media, they have become more at risk. Although social media is a great way to help people know what is going on in the world, provide ways to get to know people without facing them, and stay connected with distant family, it can lead to obstacles, such as the lack of attention to family, connecting to social media can cause a tragedy, and it can damage reputations.

...elationships. Minimizing the use of technology and its social media will not kill you. It is simply going to save you from ruining a healthy relationship with family. One citizen can start the change for families, but it is clearly up to the community to realize what they have before it is all gone. Family will always be there, but can a communication device do the same a human being can? Make a difference. Think about it.

Our modern day society depends on technology for everything, can anyone imagine a life without their phone or computer? Probably not, social media and other popular applications have become so ingrained into our daily lives. Not only can we connect with people anytime throughout the day but we also have so many useful applications that help us on a daily basis. Thinking back to when I was eight years old, I couldn 't wait for sixth grade because my parents had promised to get me a cell phone, I remember counting down the days till the summer of fifth grade was over because I already knew which cell phone I wanted. Once I got it I couldn’t stop showing my mom all of the cool things it could do. Which looking back at it today, it really couldn
The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families by Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, Kathleen Clarke-Pearson and Council on Communications and Media, 2011
Social media is like a multi-talented limitless sponge, but without any holes. This sponge has become a place where everyone can post almost anything from one location and have others in another location be able to view and comment on it. It allows relatives to stay connected through the use of social media, by just pushing a few buttons on the keyboard on either a smartphone or a computer. The distances between them would not matter as long as they had internet access. Social media could, however, be used to embarrass people to the point of no return, like having an enemy post a video of you confessing that you hate your job. However, you were drunk at the time and had no idea there was a smartphone in your face while you made your shameful
The effects and impacts of social media on society are pretty evident, and picturesquely obvious. People get to do things that they could not do 30 years ago like communicate across the computer network instead of going all the way to their house or job, and the overall convenience of it is a very welcomed one. This has changed people lives for the better, and in some cases, for the worse. One of the life changing ways of social media on society is that kids do not feel it is necessary to talk face to face anymore, and this is complete made evident by the many thousands of people who have Facebook pages; even parents. The effects of this has broken and in some cases, divided families because no one is spending time together anymore like they used to do. One example of this is when a mother wants to spend time with her teenage daughter, but her teenage daughter is all about finding out who Darcy broke up with on Facebook which Darcy never revealed. However, this neglect was brought to the mom by the social media that all of the kids are about these days; the girl pays a price as well because she is missing out on time with her mother. A lot of people, mostly teenagers are ignoring the precepts of family because they are more tuned into society’s social media which is not all that important. The impact of this is that people’s family values are suffering as a result because social media on society has everyone in society at each other’s throats trying to become popular. For example, the captain of the basketball team has a Facebook announcing a party that he is having at his house. Instead of the captain’s circle of friends doing their homework, they are out partying with the captain. Overtime, everybody is paying more and more atte...
Katona and Sarvary (2014) define social media as “the way in which people interact to create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks”. Asur and Huberman (2010) state that social media is shifting in a high-speed the conversations in the society about topics from the environment and politics to the technology and the entertainment industry due to the easy use, speed and capacity of social media platforms and networks. Well-known social media platforms include Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn,Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Tumblr, Reddit, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and more. Social media differ from related concepts such as Web 2.0, which is considered as the platform for the development of social media (Kaplan
Social media has changed the way people communicate with each other and in turn, has affected our ability to empathize in both negative and positive ways. One of the most harmful consequences is the rise of cyber-bullying. Another negative issue has been the trend of trolling in comments sections of websites, chat rooms, and other online venues of communication. In spite of this, there have been constructive consequences due to social media such as the ability for family and friends to keep in touch on a regular basis. Because of social media, many people are finding support and resources to help them when they fall on hard times or experience tragedies like death and illness. Overall, social media is an exciting new world that changes as it grows and it will be up to society to utilize it for good.
Unfortunately, children are being exposed the most on social media and are oblivious to it. From the moment children are born into the world of technology, their lives are being shared on social media. In Nancy Jo Sales’ book, American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers, she went around the country conducting interviews, researching the impacts of social media, and observing different social situations. According to many studies done by internet security firms, thousands of pictures of a child will be posted of them by age five. Almost ninety-five percent of kids will have pictures surfaced of them by age two. Never before have the ups and downs of growing up been present for everybody to see (Sales 32). Every monumental
Although there are many positive aspects of social media, we cannot simply ignore the possible risks associated with using it. Some of these risk can have negative effects on individuals, families, and even society as a whole. Some of these risks include, but are not limited to, decay of social interaction, reduced productivity in the workplace, and negative effects on one’s
Social media allows loved ones to communicate with those far and close. For instance, not everyone lives in the same city/country; thus, making it hard stay in contact. Although, this communication is able to continue if one has social media accounts like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat. This is allowed to take place because these social media accounts in specific allows its users to show both friends and family small things like what they're eating, or big things like who they just got married to. This reveals that social media isn't a negative thing but instead plays a positive role in our lives because it allows us to build relationships and keep them healthy. In addition, social media may also be used help those who struggle with socializing .
As technology progresses, the American culture starting to have a synergetic association that is codependent on each other. Technology was built on the means of benefiting humanity by making communication and entertainment more accessible. Through the use of technology, wireless forms of communication has become immensely popular. Just about everyone in America has some type of electronic device that connects them to the world - the World Wide Web. Generally, parents use wireless technology to connect with their children, and children are using technology to stay in touch with friends and family. Equally important to wireless technology is how much of an influence social media have on a family. The use of social media, requires, and consumes, a lot of time and creates many distractions to what is important such as family. Not to mention, having wireless
Social media is used by many people, young and old around the world as a way to communicate. Our lives have become so busy that it is difficult to maintain family and social relationships. “They use social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. On these sites users create profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research and share thoughts, photos, music, links and more” (Social Networking). With the use of social media you can be friends with all sorts of people without actually seeing or knowing them. “In many ways, social communities are the virtual equivalent of meeting at the general store or at church socials to exchange news and get updated on friends and families” (Cosmato).
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
You can access Twitter, Facebook, and other social Medias at the touch of a finger. There are some positive influences that social networking has to offer; people can develop “life-long relationships” as well as becoming more cyber social which could possibly break the fear barrier for introverted individuals (Taylor). For others, it seems we have made social networking have higher importance in our everyday lives. We wake up in the morning and the first thing we do is check our Twitter or Facebook. Relying on these social networks to keep our lives balanced has become more of a nuisance than a solution to our social problems. The more we use these social media every day, the more we continue to render ourselves helpless to facing the harsh reality of the real world that we live in.
Have you ever thought how harmful social media is for kids and the parents? Ellen Goodman’s essay “Family Counterculture” has a message in which she calls todays culture “an increasingly hostile environment” for kids. Her claim is not only well explained and backed up with proof but plenty of parents that I know have said the something or something similar about social media. Social media can lead to many unpleasant things that can cause a parent to frustrate, it can cause their kids to pick up bad habits, can cause kids to be depressed, and cause kids to be brainwashed by ads. Because kids in this generation over use social media it creates many problems for them and their parents. Social media can be used for good things but in this generation,
