Leaders who utilize social media as a communication channel improve employees' satisfaction and encourage sharing of information. “In 2017, 81 percent of U.S. Americans had a social media profile, representing a five percent growth compared to the previous year. According to estimates, the number of worldwide social media users reached 1.96 billion and is expected to grow to some 2.5 billion by 2018” (“U.S. population”, 2017). A personal brand sums up aspirations, beliefs, values, experiences and personal attributes better than a resume or interview can. With personal branding there is a part of self-discovery that is beneficial professionally, personally and academically. When setting up a personal brand the brand should be consistent across all accounts, profiles and aligned with the personal brand. This can ultimately make or break a career, if a personal brand is professional and aligned with the profession, it could make the person more appealing than other potential employees. A professional personal brand across all social media accounts can reach far more employers than expected, which can give a person the best career opportunity available. That remains, why it’s vital to portray ones’ self in the utmost professional way possible across all social media platforms. “Social networking is not merely a way to waste time, but if used wisely it is a means of self-representation and self-promotion” (Decarie, …show more content…
In addition, “Completely banning the use of personal devices is proven to lower morale among employees but the lack of any policy leads to a form of employee presenteeism. Presenteeism, in this case, means employees are present at their desk but are spending too much time texting, checking their personal emails, or social media” (Collette, 2016). Employees need to be kept happy to keep morale high, but the company must also set polices that protect business, increase productivity, as well as the concern of security related to information about a business that is considered classified and personal in which can be leaked, shared, or lost on a personal device especially when including social media. This is only scratching the surface of what issues could arise, but at the same time how many positives are present to outweigh negatives? Luckily, we can use technology as an advantage rather than only
In recent years, the realms of marketing and public relations have changed. Branding has become an increasingly important tool for businesses. As described in Kleppner’s Advertising Procedure, attributes of a successful brand include recognition, differentiation, imagery, and the ability to link all brand communications to that brand (Lane, King, Russell, & Kleppner, 2005 p. 639). In 2016, branding also means having a strong presence on social media. Lisa Ostrowercha describes social media as another way “… for your brand to share its personality with the masses” (Ostrowercha, 2016).
An employer also should restrict an employee’s access to the internet or access to certain web sites, or prohibit the use of personal work computers. As a result, there is no right to claim privacy against your employer for monitoring or restricting your use of the internet. Having an internal regulation could avoid the personal use of a computer in the workplace, the employers are the owners of the computers, and they are also the owners of the data transmitted to and from the computers, regardless of the source. Another reason that justifies the employer's ability to control the use of the computer in the workplace is the security of their internal systems. Computer systems can be vulnerable to viruses and other types of technological problems if employees are downloading information and Internet programs, or other potentially harmful materials. Security can also be a problem in that employees can violate the company's confidentiality rules. By monitoring the use of the personal Internet, employers can prevent employees from being the means of disseminating confidential information about the company to the

In my personal opinion about this very datable topic, “Does Increased Dependence on Laptops, Cell Phones, and PDAs Hurt Employee Productivity?” is that I believe it does hurt the employee productivity. I feel that if the usage of our cell phones, laptops, and other PDAs at work are to be reduced, it will make the employees focus more on their work. Most employees argue that they are taking notes during meetings and are recording the conversations; however, I question if that is what they are really doing. In the last few years, many of us have witnessed the rise in technologies. From cell phones being big, bulky blocks to cell phones being touch screen, and fit nicely in our pockets. I am no one to say that technology does not produce efficiency.
Blogs, digital portfolios and CV’s are some of the ways to gain identity exposure. A personal brand-building course from Udemy offers lectures explaining how to get the most out of each of the media platforms, such as, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter. Those are just a few of many, but the course also explains how to be the first on emerging platforms. Because technology is frequently changing, keeping up with trends is important to online presence.
We cannot blame modernity for unfiltered and unprofessional behavior; the Internet can be blamed for poor conduct, and impulsive behavior. It makes sure that behaviors are discoverable to the public domain thanks to the multiple repositories like the cloud, smart phones, and tablets. Furthermore, it blurs the fine line between off-duty activities, in many occupational settings in the workplace. The inharmonious storm of the digital world in the workplace results to consequences that are applicable to employees, and employers in labor laws (Herbert, 2013).

This onus placed on managers is compounded by organizational advancements and the application of new technologies. One relatively new organizational technology being applied is the use of social media. Social media creates communication issues yet conversely alleviates specific communication barriers by playing several roles within organizations today.
