Social Media has changed not just the way you communicate with your friends and family but how you communicate with the world. Social Media has played very big parts when it comes to not just entertainment wise, but also political. Citizens and non-citizens alike from different countries pour into different social media accounts such as Facebook, twitter, instagram, etc… to express their opinions and feelings towards some injustice that is going on and it creates such big impacts that either changes do happen or changes are slowly happening.
The book Digital Literacy, by Susan Wiesinger and Ralph Beliveau, sums up pretty clearly what this social media gathering means and they call it “social movement” (p.100). Wisinger and Beliveau (2016)
One thing that separates Egypt from the other countries that have been freed from oppression is one simple thing, social media. Early this year, a child somehow made its way inside a gorilla habitat where it encountered a silver backed gorilla named Harambe, because of the dangerous situation the child was in, the keepers decided to shoot it and ultimately kill it. The news spread all over from news outlets to even social media. Everyone wanted justice for this gorilla. “Why Millions Would Back a Gorilla’s Life Over Black Lives Matter” Earl Ofari Hutchinson asked the same question that many were also thinking about, “why there isn’t the same rage and passion over the gunning down of unarmed blacks by police?” A death of a gorilla was a trending hash tag and still today people talk about it meanwhile a black unarmed man gets blatantly shot to death and he is in the media for a couple of days.
