On a daily bases one encounters multiple social interaction situations. The main social interaction that I encounter is the college roommate situation. This social interaction is one that I constantly am analyzing, and observing. So one can assume that to effectively study/research this situation the appropriate research method to use would be participant observation (Fieldwork) method. In this particular roommate situation there are three individuals, to keep their private lives private their names would not be revealed. As for this “roommate-ship” there are two females and one male, female 1 and the male are cousins and where the initial pair of roommates. Later on female 2, friends with female 1 moved in and completed this trio. The length of this social situation has been in for four years and has become a primary group. In such way, that they have become a support system for each other and have a sense of responsibility to each other. Also, the roommates spend a significant amount of time together. Spending so much time together, the roommates have created learned that they have a different social structure than other roommate situations. For examples they feel free to come in their home screaming and excited whenever they feel like it. Once the individuals step into the house it is not uncommon to let out a scream. As opposed to when they go food shopping they follow the social structure that is at play at the grocery store. Although Female 1 and the Male come from working poor class and female 2 comes from lower middle class, all according to the Gilbert and Kahl Model. There is a commonality between them when it comes to social class. All three graduated from high school, were accepted to Pennsylvania University a... ... middle of paper ... ...o know what would be acceptable to do because of the Males devotion to the religion. As most college students engaging in deviant behavior for the Females partying and drinking is common. As of today they have figured out how to be respectful of each other’s choices. As mentioned in the beginning Participant Observation would be an effective method to study this “roommate-ship” situation. This is a good strategy because any one of the roommates can conduct it, and give one a chance to be directly involved. For example, if one was participating in a Participation Observation specifically for this social situation. One could see what effect living with new people has on one’s behavior and attitudes? Participant Observation gives the person access to the group that they want to study. it would be real results because the participants would be in their normal setting.
Human being spend much time observing the world in which they live in. observing the world is something were familiar with is just that we have not considered it as a way of doing formal research. Observation does not just involve vision, it includes interpretation of that same date, it’s not just recording of data from environment we observe, we are active our brains are engaged as well as our eyes and ears. In a social gathering where you don’t know people researcher can adopt participant observation where she has two roles to play that is being an observer and participant. In a hospital a nurse can pretend to be a patient in other to be admitted into the ward to enable her obtain adequate information because informant
Finding a roommate in college was a lot more difficult than expected. Knowing someone and creating a strong foundation of friendship is completely different than living with someone. I assume people know about room etiquette such as when you close the door behind you, I’d assume you think that would be an indication for privacy or a non-verbal gesture of privacy and boundaries but for my roommates I guess this miscommunication does not compute in his mind. I did not think this would come to an interpersonal conflict between myself and my roommate.
She reaches out to the Resident Assistant for assistance and she is guided to speak with her roommate. Whitley confronts her roommate and they display the bad side of conflict because Whitley demands that her roommate have no visitation rights. Her roommate retaliates and Whitley decides to move with Dwayne. Whitley roommate follows her to his room a few minutes after their debate. When she arrives they are able to discuss their conflict and come to a mutual agreement which is a form of good conflict resolution. Due to their cooperative nature as they are able to resolve their conflict my actively listening to one another and by creating a cooperative agreement to respect each other’s
Greeting Behavior of College Students I never thought that the topic, “Greeting Behavior of College Students” could be such a diverse and widespread theme as it is; the more I thought about it, the larger and more diverse the topic grew. First of all there is the definition of greeting, which I define as the act of a friendly saluting. I define behavior biologically, by the way of a learned pattern of reactions to a stimulus. What is included in the greeting behavior?
“At first it was over whelming just because its the first house I ever bought and I am in college,” said Caldwell. “ The hardest part is dealing with all the issues, whether it be with the house or roommate drama. People seem to think that the landlord should be the mediator but that’s not the case.”
Each floor, there are 24 rooms and I was told that 60% of residents are African American 30% are Latino and rest of them are Asian residents from the manager. Neighborhoodnear the apartment consists of mostly Black community and there were various incidents such as murder, firearm, and burglary reported nearresident’s apartment. When I walked into the apartment, there was the intercom on the main entrance that visitors must verify their identity and purpose to visit in order to go in. There are two elevators running fast and well. Before I entered the resident’s room, I noticed that doorway and passage way are narrow to accommodatewith assistive device and equipment. Ramps and light are available properly to hallway, entrance and an emergency exit. Each side of floor, there is an exit stair in order to use for an emergency or under construction. In resident’s room, lighting is adequately available (it is not too dim or too bright) and light switches are easy to reach and find. Despite furnitureor clutter is not obstructing walkway, there is rugin the living room that is slipped. Although an emergency button and string are in the bathroom, bathroom is not inside of room and easily accessible. However, there is stable chair with armrest in the tub for supporting and protecting from fall. Toilet with grab rails is also available and toilet seat is low appropriately for
More often than not, RAs handle conflicts between roommates. The speaker talks about how love is a component to being able to

Participant observation is a method of collecting information and data about a culture and is carried out by the researcher immersing themselves in the culture they observing. The researcher becomes known in the community, getting to know and understand the culture in a more intimate and detailed way than would be possible from any other approach. This is done by observing and participating in the community’s daily activities. The method is so effective because the researcher is able to directly approach the people in the community in a natural context as opposed to taking the participant out of their environment. The aim of participant observation is to gain an understanding the subject’s life from their perspective, with the purpose of collecting more detailed information about a community’s habits, opinions, relationships and issues.
You will always have a partner in crime: No matter what conspires, your roommate will be by your side to bail you out from any trouble you may be in.
Living with a roommate can be tough, but the best thing you can do is establish rules from the get-go. According to Kate and Brett McKay from artmanliness.com here are some of the rules that you should establish when you first move in with somebody new. When you first move in you should establish; when should the dishes get washed, who cleans what and when, when should everyone pay their share of rent and utility bills, can significant others spend the night or stay there for a few days, are pets allowed, what should the nighttime and morning time noise level be, is
The first thing to accomplish is knowing the fact that in a dorm room, everyone has a job. Everyone in the room must provide certain things. For example, one should bring the refrigerator, the other, a microwave, and so forth. When things are brought, they are to be shared, that’s what living together is all about. Nothing should be secluded from each other, especially the necessities of the room. If a roommate decides not to share, then they should learn nothing will be shared with them, and should more than likely live alone, if they have a problem with sharing.
Schedules are a difficult thing to balance. A person must find the time to complete a number of tasks in a day. A normal adult may have time to get everything done and still have time to spare. The normal college student on the other hand is constantly on the go. College students have busy schedules that include working, studying, and socializing.
The stress of living in a dorm for many freshmen is great; the transition from living in a comfortable environment, such as a guardian’s home, to living outside of it is very traumatic. It is hard because he or she has always depended on the guardian for a calm stable home life, but there is nothing stable or calm about a dorm. The combination of health problems, the feeling of living in a cell, and dealing with many different individuals makes the experience almost unbearable.
A new experience, a change from the norm, looking out for myself, and living on my own: for me this is college. The transition of high school student to college seemed immensely overwhelming and even a bit scary. The shift opened a can of worms and created challenges, both good and bad, behind every corner. Due to the change of scene, I am now dealing with the everyday acceptance of the greater world around me: the town, the people and my new life.
