Introduction/background
The perceived motivations for wanting to enter into the social work profession has been a topic of controversial debate for several decades, with intrinsic benefits outweighing the extrinsic benefits, many question why an individual would enter into such a low paying profession with such high stressors involved. These preconceived notions about motivations for choosing to enter into such a field consist of primarily intrinsic motivations such as feelings of satisfaction, a sense of accomplishment, and a love for one 's work. This report adopts a qualitative approach to further investigate these preconceived notions, by a way of having conducted an interview with one female second year social work student from the University of Sydney, by focusing on the social, cultural and environmental factors that has influenced her decision to undertake a career in the social work profession.

There was an interview guide used that listed the questions that needed to be covered during the conversation, in a particular order. The guide was followed, but it was adjusted to be able to follow relevant trajectories in the conversation that strayed from the guide when it felt appropriate to do so. Open-ended questions were used as much possible, to allow for the opportunity for identifying new ways of seeing and understanding the topic at hand. As Alston and Bowles (2012, p. 197) argue many researchers like to use semi-structured interviews because questions can be prepared ahead of time, this allows the interviewer to be prepared and appear competent during the interview. Semi-structured interviews also allow participants the freedom to express their views in their own terms and can provide reliable, comparable qualitative
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
Social Workers are very important to everyday life. They are the ones that help people in need when they have nobody else to turn too. Also, they provide resources and better understanding of predicaments that you could be experiencing. I will reflect on how the class has affected me, my own experiences and how some theories have connected to my life experiences, and lastly, if the class helped toward my major. This class is important for someone that wants to become a social worker and wants to learn about the different theories used. Also, learning about me during this process of completing this class is fun and a way to see if the social work profession is right for me. There was many theories explained throughout this class but many will not be said because it wasn’t the main points that I was trying to get across. There are two tools that are used that can help a social worker organize a client’s life: Bubble map and Briefcase exercise. There are so many different ways a social worker can help a client deal with their problems and come up with a solution. It is up to that social worker to identify the client’s problem and see what theory fits.
In the health care field, social workers are faced with one of the most difficult and conflict social problem. Patients who are chronically ill have on occasion if they can end their life at their decision. As a social work, you must follow your code of ethics and the law by denying their right to the end-of-life decision. This is called euthanasia, a practice used to end the life of a seriously ill male or female. There is a conflicting issue on the interplay of person and professional views social workers given to patients who are experiencing or experienced end-of-life decisions. There are multiple conflicts with the use of euthanasia and assisted suicide, one major factor is the lack of training needed to successfully handle the situation. Another factor is that the constitutional laws conflict with the actions of agreeing to end someone’s life. For instance, Dr. Jack Kevorkian performed the act of euthanasia on a chronically ill man and publicly videotaped the procedure. He was at the time in the state of Michigan, a state that bans euthanasia and assisted suicide. He was charged with murder and sent to jail for his
Theories can help explain why a problem is occurring and where the most effective intervention should take place. Theories can be obtained from research and from facts. According to Michael Tropeano “a theory is a statement backed by evidence gathered through the scientific method intended to explain something. Theoretical approaches for social work are often used to explain human behavior and serve as starting points for practice models and treatments.”
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
1. What relationships and/or experiences influenced your decision to enter the field of Social Work? A personal experience that influenced my decision to enter the field of social work is when I joined the military after high school. I want to become a social worker to help connect people to available resources when they may be in a place of injustice or despair and offer them the guidance they may need to make important decisions that can be life changing. Also, I am interested in being a social worker because the work can be extremely rewarding. I do understand, some days will be extremely difficult, but I also understand that when you can go home at the end of the day, knowing you’ve done your best to help someone, that is a rewarding feeling and I will know that I chosen the right career path. I also believe strongly that people are inherently good and capable of doing good. All together, through different day to day experiences and my drive to do good and help facilitate change are just some of the reasons I am applying to a professional degree of social
This paper will explore what the primary mission of social work as a professional means to me. Theory is defined as “…”. In the social work profession, it is not enough to just understand the definition of theory, but rather be able to integrate theory into practice when working to plan interventions at multiple practice levels. This integration of theory into the social work practice is an emphasis of the profession as noted in the profession’s core competencies. Core competency 2.1.6 “engage in research-informed practice and practice-informed research” (NASW code of ethics) is the basis for theory integration within the social work profession. The main reason I chose the social work profession, manifested early within my stages of childhood. The importance of giving to and caring for those in need, were deeply embedded in my very soul. Being reared by my grandmother, a nurse and by my teenage mother, a psychology student, I was exposed constantly to acts of kindness and generosity. As a result to my empathetic personality, I was welcomed into many social and ethnic groups, not commonly open to a young gay black male. In these younger years with the assistance of my parents, my love for others allowed me to help other teenagers in crisis, often providing shelter, advice, monetary assistance and a listening
