If you have ever read the book 1984 by George Orwell, then an interesting topic may have crossed your mind. The way the classes of people break down can be quite similar, and very different at times. In the United States, we have classes like the lower class, the working class, and the middle class. In 1984, there were such classes as the Proles, the Outer Party, and the Inner Party. The way the classes are broken down in 1984 reminds me a little bit of my old history class. When I studied medieval times and the classes back then were broken down into the nobles, the bourgeois, and the serfs.
Society has categorized individuals depending on their financial status and their income; also known as social class. There are three original social classes in America, upper, middle, and lower class. The classes may sometimes be further divided into upper- upper, lower-upper, upper-middle and lower middle; with the working and lower classes at the bottom; working poor and underclass.
I will explore how social classes frankly appear and build up the story of the book by comparing and contrast with a modern social hierarchy. Today, we’re living in a society with social classes existing. We can be classified in different classes and so do I. I wish I could designate my social status, but unfortunately, our social classes are usually determined by wealth (income), occupation, education and prestige. Social class can be shown in a pyramid structure and it usually comprises with upper class, upper middle class, lower middle class, working class and lower class.
Society formed three main social groups. This new social pyramid is executed in Image 2 (Document 1: The Royal Standard of Ur). On one side of the Egyptian city there are small, crude buildings conglomerated together. These buildings are inhabited by the poor. On the opposite side of the picture, the buildings are more defined and a majority are spread farther apart. Some buildings are even standing on an individual plot of land. Social class is a subjective concept in social sciences and political theory where individuals are grouped into different classes. This set a hierarchy inside the society structure where the upper and lower class exist and contribute to the society. These different classes try to differentiate social groups based on economic, social, and political resources. Those that are considered higher class are known to earn large annual income, control a large amount of the country’s wealth such as real estate, stocks and bonds, and live lifestyles that people envy. However, those of lower class are known to earn low annual income, own little to no property, show forms of behavior that is viewed as criminal like. Between the two spectrums the criminal justice puts a label on the crime committed by either side. Class in the American Culture is based on economic and social differences, and it remains a powerful force in American life and has come to play a greater role in today’s society. American culture classified social classes as three different levels, the higher class which is classified as the wealthier and have the most money and a certain lifestyles and clothes. The middle class more like the businesses, people who have a reasonable income. And the last class is the low class which are the working class people. Those in the upper middle classes enjoy better health and live longer than those in the middle classes, who live longer and better than those at the bottom. That 's because money, good jobs and connections help the better-off get the best medical care. People in the upper class also maintain a certain lifestyle and sometimes different clothing lifestyle than the ones in the lower classes.
The social classes consisted of the upper class, which included aristocrats and wealthy landowners, the middle class, which was made up of traders, public workers, shop owners, and members of the social work force. Finally, the lower class consisted of farmers and slaves. The differences between each class were quite noticeable, and the reason behind this was the way that the government regulated the flow of the money (Lemann). The upper class, which held most of the power, greatly influenced the creation of laws and the collection of taxes. This led to excessive taxes for the middle and lower class, which then went to the “government” or the upper class. Consecutively, the upper class paid little to no taxes, allowing their wealth to greatly increase (Thacker). Social class, as defined by the film, is something that affects who you are as a person. In the film, the people saw class as the defining factor of a person. They saw class as a barrier between people. If one person is in a different class than another person, then obviously, they are not supposed to associate. They allowed their social class to dictate their action each day. It was amazing to me just how much the people in the film allowed their class to truly define them and really serve as a boundary in their life. The people in the film lived their daily life with their social class as the most influential factor. Their worth and value as individuals was not determined by anything else except the amount of money they had. It was really interesting to see how the amount of money a person had somehow equated with their worth in society.
