Many people experience butterflies in their stomach, sweaty palms, pounding of the heart or a combination of all three in intimidating social situations. But for many people, over 15 million American adults, “this anxiety causes extreme self-consciousness in everyday social or performance situations” (SAD Brochure, pg. 2). For these individuals, their anxiety occurs even doing the simplest tasks like ordering food or making a phone call. This brochure, created by the Anxiety and Depression Association of American (ADAA), attempts to inform their audience about what Social Anxiety Disorder is, how SAD affects these individuals, and how to get treatment for SAD. The color scheme of the brochure is orange with a white background. The orange color on the brochure is a muted orange so that it gives off a calming effect and it is also said this color can symbolize optimism or even happiness. This brochure also includes many a comparison table with normal anxiety and social anxiety situations so that the audience can understand and directly compare the two. Also at the bottom of each page of the brochure there are words in different fonts, sizes, and colors that highlight the important information that the author wants the audience to take away from that page. Lastly on the first and last pages of this brochure the ADAA symbol is included on these pages in order to let the readers know that this brochure is legitimate and includes factual based information and so that the readers will know where to go in order to find treatment. Symptoms of SAD, the differences between normal and social anxiety, reasons why it is important to get treatments, and a resource where individuals can receive treatment are all located in this brochure so that readers will have the important information and will not have to locate other websites or news articles to understand what it is they have to do to help. Also included in this brochure are “adapting strategies” (Penrose & Katz, 2010, p. 204),that condenses this information and makes it easily relatable and understandable to its
