Elements of Emotional Intelligence The elements of emotional intelligence that leaders must be aware of are self-awareness, self-management, motivation, social awareness, and relationship management (Batool, 2013). Collectively, these elements permit a manager to understand and manage behaviors of the self and others. In other words, a leader must understand her emotions (introspection) and the emotions of others (empathy).
First, self-awareness is the ability to understand how one is feeling. Being aware of one’s feelings allows leaders to cope and self-manage. Empathy, is the ability to perceive how someone else thinks or feels. Empathetic skills include social awareness and relationship management. According to Batool, Empathetic leaders are able to “help develop the people on their team, challenge others who are acting unfairly, give constructive feedback and listen to those who need it” (Batool, 2013, p. 89). Leaders with empathy are able to understand others’ feelings and appropriately address their concerns. Like self-awareness, social awareness is the ability to understand how others are feeling. Social awareness is the key to fostering and managing positive relationships. Relationship management is, thus, the ability to use social awareness to manage interactions with others effectively (Bradberry, 2014). Moreover, organizations can combine different training programs to increase effectiveness and sustain learning. For example, organizations can combine workshops and computer-based training (CBT) to increase the effectiveness of training. Workshops are generally more engaging and allow leaders to interact with one another. In addition, instructors of workshops can ask leaders questions and check for understanding. Next, CBTs are a great tool to reinforce learning without the major expense of workshops. Workshops require companies to pay for travel costs and to sacrifice the loss of production in order to bring its leaders to one location. Emotional intelligence (EI) plays an important role in every worker in organization or corporation, especially someone with the authority or power inside the organization. A leader has to become a source of inspiration and catalyst for the employee to improve their working condition. One true leader has the ability to read what people want even though it never being told (Meghan, 2014). This will allow the employee to build a good connection and relationship between the leaders, thus improve how the organization being conducted. As a student of psychology with a desire to pursue a career in counseling, understanding and developing personal emotional intelligence could play a significate role in the success or failure of my career. Emotional Intelligence (EQ), according to John Mayer (2009) is the ability to be aware of and manage one’s own and others emotions (para. 1). Myers (2013) identifies four components of emotional intelligence (pg. 375). The first is emotional awareness, or the ability to recognize emotions in yourself and others. Second is the ability to understand emotions. In other words, to understand how emotions affect us personally, how they affect others, and the meanings emotions convey. In addition to being aware of and understanding emotions, one also needs to manage emotions, appropriately expressing and regulating personal emotions, and being able to encourage or calm another person. The final component of emotional intelligence is being able to use emotions to think creatively and solve problems. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to communicate non-verbally with one’s emotion and others to promote continuous collaboration while managing ones’ leadership position (Harvard Business Review, 2015a; Nahavandi, 2014). The needed traits of EQ are self-awareness, self-motivation, self- regulation, emotional management, good listening skills and social skills, and most importantly empathy for others (Lynn, 2008; Nahavandi, 2014). Emotions are frequent companions in our lives. They come and go, and constantly change like the weather. They generate powerful chemicals that create positive and negative feelings, which have a powerful effect on leadership. Some emotions can either facilitate leadership, while others can detract from successful leadership. This course, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, has truly opened my eyes to the affects that emotions have on being an effective leader. Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p. 5). This definition in itself states that emotions, whether it be ones own emotions or those of others, is the underlying factor that directs the actions of a leader. Therefore, throughout the progression (advancement) of this course, I have learned the importance of the development of emotional intelligence for being an effective leader, and because of this I plan on developing the capacities that contribute to being an emotionally intelligent leader for my own success, now and in the future.

No matter what kind of situation we're in, they always seem to know just what to say – and how to say it – so that we're not offended or upset. They're caring and considerate, and even if we don't find a solution to our problem, we usually leave feeling more hopeful and optimistic. We probably also know people who are masters at managing their emotions. They don't get angry in stressful situations. Instead, they have the ability to look at a problem and calmly find a solution. They're excellent decision makers, and they know when to trust their intuition. Regardless of their strengths, however, they're usually willing to look at themselves honestly. Self-awareness, emotional intelligence and self-concept come into play when also relating with others, keeping in mind that there are different personalities in a workplace and they all play different roles in organizational success. Having insight into one’s self enhances understanding of others (GCU, 2016). A conscious leader who is self-aware, emotionally intelligent and has self-concept will be able to effectively manage people and handle conflict in a manner that produces a positive result. For instance, at my previous job, an open position for a new team lead was advertised. My former manager interviewed internally and also interviewed external candidates. She eventually hired an external candidate as a new employee, however, one of the long term employees that was also interviewed for the position was not happy the job was given to a new hire. My manager at the time was able to detect through emotional intelligence that the employee was not happy due to her sad mood and change in interactive behavior. She then had a meeting with the employee, they both came to a resolution that made the employee regain her positive attitude towards her job. This concept was firstly developed by two American university professors, John Mayer and Peter Salovey (1990) and they concluded that, people with high emotional quotient are supposed to learn more quickly due to their abilities. Another psycologist named Daniel Goleman (1995) extended the theory and also made it well-known. In his articles and books, he argued that people with high emotional quotient do better than those with low emotional quotient. In this essay, it will be argued that high emotional intelligence can influence work performance positively to a relatively high extent. Both benefits and limitations of a high level of EI in the workplace will be discussed and a conclusion will be drawn at the end of this essay.
