Everyone thinks team sports are only good for the physical and fun part. However, that is not true, team sports have many good benefits. One of those benefits is the development of good character. Character is defined as, "those moral qualities that constitute the nature of a leader and shape his or her decisions and actions" (USMA). There are Six Principles of good character which include; honesty, courage, compassion, generosity, fidelity, integrity, fairness, self-control and prudence, according to the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University. Discipline is a very great trait to have in life. Discipline helps a person make decisions and stick to it. When participating in team sports one develops self-discipline when they find time to practice and better themselves in that sport. Discipline is developed through team sports and is carried over well into life. Discipline is taught in sports by the athlete pushing hard to succeed Respecting others is part of having self-discipline. In the article, Social and Emotional Benefits of Playing Sports, the author states, “Respecting opponents is a central part of every game and great sportsmanship” (Rosario). Participating in team sports or any sports help one maintains a healthy body which contributes to good character. Participating in sports provides consistent exercise. When one’s body is healthy and in shape it helps boost the confidence of the person and it produces a positive outcome for the team. According to a 2005 study at D’Youville College in Buffalo, New York, A teen who participates in sports in high school reduces her risk of taking illegal drugs. This improves the body to be healthy which will build character. If one athlete sees another person doing drugs the athlete will be able to help the other teenagers with why they should do the drugs with following the principals of good character. In the article, “Get Off That Couch and Play”, it states, “Students learn important life skills such as how to accept criticism, how to handle oneself under the pressure of competition, how to work hard toward a goal, how to win and lose graciously” (“Get Off That Couch and Play” 1). In sports, teens can learn how to accept criticism from their coaches, athletes have to learn that they do not do everything right and at some point they will get corrected by a coach and have to learn how to deal with that and accept it. Also, during middle school sports children learn how to handle themselves under pressure. A teammate may be pressuring them to work harder, or to score a goal and an athlete needs to learn how to stay calm while the pressure is riding on them. Furthermore, working hard towards a goal is taught throughout middle school sports because setting a goal you want to achieve is important to how you perform while competing.

Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.

At some point students has had trouble either at home or at school and need to release stress or tension. Some of these times the teens choose to do activities that are wrong. Youth want to feel comfort and accepted, therefore they sometimes will do events that are not well for their body just to fit in with a group. There is evidence that proves sports can reduce the likeliness of teens committing crimes, or getting into trouble. Tees look at the negative substances such as drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and think that they can do whatever they want. Participating in a team sport can increase one’s self esteem. By being part of a team, you will give and receive praise. Receiving recognition from a team mate or a coach will boost your self esteem because you have been acknowledged for your efforts. As you are praised for your efforts, you will become more confident, thus improving your self esteem. Often times, the bond formed between team mates on the field translates into a friendship off the field.
