Soccer is a very popular sport among athletes all around the world, whether they be young children starting out, high school or college students, or a professional athlete who has played for many years. Many studies today are showing that soccer concussions are beginning to sky rocket and it is becoming a serious problem. In many Concussions cases it seems that female patients are more likely to obtain a concussion than male players. Concussions are causes by Heading the ball, Player to player contact, Defending, Goalkeeping, and in every position and of the game. Not only will these injuries sideline a player it can also cause a drop in academics. When a player receives a concussion the person’s brain becomes very weak and sensitive to strenuous activities. For example, one story in particular a freshman high school student named Sarah was a straight A student. During a game Sarah received a concussion that drastically changed her ability to perform well in school. “My concussion didn’t just sideline me from sports; it also sidelined me from school. Before my injury, I was taking advanced classes. Immediately afterward, I couldn’t even do simple math problems in my head and couldn’t keep up with the lessons. Without extra support, my injury could have had a significant negative impact on my academic record.” (CDC, 2015) This is a great example of how the protective head gear could have helped prevent this concussion and not hurt the academic performance of a student. Academics are a huge part of many athletes lives today whether it be Elementary, Middle, or High School all the way to college level players. “After a concussion, rest is critical to help the brain heal.
