Safety of Skiers and Snowboarders
Ski helmets are definitely important to be worn as it will keep people safe from the danger that surrounds them. Helmets have saved lives of bicyclists, skateboarders, skaters and others because they are required to be worn. As a result, people who have gotten in accidents while wearing helmets were most likely very thankful that they were wearing one. Although these type of accidents do not necessarily happen to everyone, they do happen on a daily basis and come very unexpectedly, even on the slopes. It is clear that there should be law that requires people to wear helmets when snow-skiing and snowboarding, no matter the age, because it is for their safety and to avoid extreme consequences if not worn.

There is a wide range of skiers and snowboarders with different skill sets but even the most experienced skiers and snowboarders crash and fall. Most probably wear a helmet because they know the risk and have learned from the consequences. Getting in an accident could cause many different head injuries such as concussion, contusion, amnesia, cracked or fractured skull, certain disabilities, or even death. A recent article states that a Formula One racer, named Michael Schumacher, who had a ski accident in the French alps, had fell and hit his head on a rock but luckily he was wearing a helmet. The doctors say, “...there’s no way Schumacher would be alive had he not been wearing a helmet” (Seamons). Helmets are very important as they were for Schumacher because he would have died without it. For Schumacher the helmet saved his life and if people start to wear them, they can avoid serious …show more content…
While these may be true to some degree, they are not legitimate reasons to not wear a helmet. If a helmet slows a skier down then that is good as it will keep them from getting out of control and crashing. There are certain helmets which do not cover the entire face so they can see while on the slopes. While these helmets do not provide the best protection, it still gives people more protection than they would without a helmet. If people wear helmets then it will greatly increase the chance of not getting hurt. A helpful website states, “...It is recommended that all skiers wear protective headgear…[as] these measures have been proven to significantly improve the chance of survival if a serious accident occurs” (skiing Injuries). Wearing protective headgear while on the slopes is a smart way of staying protected is something were to happen. Therefore, it is better to wear a helmet because it can increase people's chances of coming out of an accident
Friction is obviously an important factor of cross country skiing. On one hand, friction is necessary because without it a skier wouldn't be able to ski up hill or even move on flat surfaces. However, when racing, skiers prefer to have the smallest friction force working on them possible.
("N.F.L. Players’ Union Weighs the Benefits and the Pitfalls of Helmet Sensors. This technology helps prevent a player with a concussion that he doesn’t know about from continuing to play during that game and cause more damage to his head that can last forever. Another good advancement is helmets that have a design that uses energy-managing materials and a facemask attachment system that disperses energy from frontal impacts. This helps prevent the head from taking the main part of the blow and disperses the energy to lessen the likelihood of becoming seriously injured from a hit. These types of helmets have a certain shelf life meaning you can only use them for so many years before they have to be replaced, this is beneficial so that the equipment stays up to the new standards of safety for the players as well as prevents them from becoming stressed over the years and breaking.
If you’ve read The Brave Ski Mom for any duration of time, you’ve probably observed that our whole family wears helmets: ski helmets, bike helmets, hockey helmets, lacrosse helmets and helmets while skateboarding. If we climbed, we’d wear helmets then, too. We LOVE helmets.

To many people play sports with concussions. This can cause serious brain trauma (Infohio). Many sports players play with concussions. According to Ken Belson of The New York Times, in his article entitled Study Suggests That Some Football Helmets Are More Protective, this is a major problem because these people are at most risk for concussions and serious bra...
Many teams after that wear the helmet not just to look cool but to be safe. One of the reasons why the were helmets are because there ever big tough guys who could destroy you in a heartbeat. So people took safety precautions and were helmets. So they wouldn't end up dead or seriously
Nearly 2.4 million Americans play hockey, which has a higher rate of concussions than any other sport. Concussions in hockey also make up 20% of all the injuries recorded for the sport. At the high school level, rules have been made so kids do not take any shots to another player’s head or neck, hoping to reduce the amount of concussions. At the professional level, players can be suspended and even fined for head shots taken during games. Any player who is not playing professionally is required to wear a wired facemask (“cage”) or a visor that connects to a chin protector (also known as a “bubble” or “fishbowl”) to reduce the possibility of the player sustaining a head injury from getting hit with a puck. Even with the cage or fishbowl, the helmet itself still does not provide the player with complete concussion prevention. Hockey helmets are not fitted like football helmets, even when they are fastened. When a player is checked, whether it is an open ice hit or into the boards, the helmet still rocks on the players head, allowing the head and neck to jolt forward, backward or
While the use of helmets does aid in protecting players from brain trauma, they also increase the risky behavior of players; this is called risk compensation. Risk compensation is the adjustment of individual behavior, responding to the perceived changes in risk (TheFreeDictionary.com). Most people that wear helmets have a pre-conceived idea that, because they have a helmet on, they can possess more daring behaviors and be fine. The helmet is basically thought of as a tool to hit harder, or improve performance in today’s culture. Adventure writer and pilot, Lane Wallace (2011) accurately understands the dangers of helmets being used incorrectly, and how they are used as weapons instead of safety. Wallace also theorizes like the NFL, a change in football culture and of viewpoints towards helmets would vastly reduce trauma to the
Lifesaving Helmets “Horses have their own thoughts, feelings and fears,” said Katelyn Keelen a riding lesson instructor and trainer at All Starr Stables as well as Scooter’s Place, a nonprofit therapeutic riding program for children with special needs. As the sport of riding horses became more popular, the less people started to wear helmets and the more riding accidents started to occur, resulting in more people being left with lifelong injuries or even fatal incidents. Not wearing a helmet while riding a horse is dangerous; all riders should be required to wear one. When riding horses it is very important to wear a helmet because, wearing a helmet when riding could have prevented many serious brain injuries. Additionally, because of not wearing a helmet many expert riders have died or
We have to be able to turn in order to navigate around other skiers, turns in the slopes, and maybe even trees depending on the slope. Turning, or carving as some skiers call it, can be very tricky and involves quite a bit of physics. As you are skiing down a hill your momentum is continuously increasing. Your speed would get to fast to control if you didn’t regularly make turns. This is why you usually see skiers going down the slopes in an “S” shaped pattern.
51.1 million people ski a year. This paper will tell you how to be successful in skiing. Skiing has a history of at least eight millennia. The earliest archaeological examples of skis were found in Russia and date to 6000 BCE. Skiing is a fun sport that makes you go fast down mountains, but it is also very dangerous.
Skiing and snowboarding are two very different sports, that have evolved and morphed together to define an entire global industry and are now tantamount as salt and pepper. Skiing was popularized decades before the conception of snowboarding however, snowboarding was conceptualized in part, by skiing. Skiing became a mainstay when it was introduced to the Olympics, it quickly grew to dominate winter sports all over the world. The world was shocked when snowboarding made its way onto the Olympics roster and was perplexed by the influence it carried. The two sports were at war from the beginning, clashing in every possible way. As skiing and snowboarding grew and evolved, so did the winter sports industry. These sports spawned a new generation of athletes, with new trends and ideas, which have completely resuscitated the snow sports industry.
“According to a 1989 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, riders with helmets had an 85% reduction in their of head injury and an 88% reduction in their risk of brain injury.” Even though it's not the safest thing, it should be where citizens choice. Why make a law if it would hurt our country more. The rate has grew tremendously, but
Challenge plays an essential role in defining a sport; it provides the individual with the feeling of achievement in success. Skiing poses challenge even in its simplest foundations. Skiing on a poor quality hill, with icy snow and poor upkeep can sometimes create more challenge than a well-groomed slope. Skiing in the backcountry away from lifts and other people in freshly fallen snow provides an opportunity for the best of skiers to test t...
Helmets are used to protect the head from falling objects or hot embers. Helmets started out as nothing more than a leather hard hat made for construction which doesn’t provide much protection or safety for the people
