Sneaker Collecting Raise your hand if you or someone you know has a keen or high interest in sneakers. Sneaker Collecting and sneakers have become a modern and interesting hobby, and have become a prominent or popular aspect of Pop culture. If I were you, knowing all this, I would want to know something about this new trend. Sneaker collecting provides a sense of self expression, can be a form of income, and makes you in tune with Pop culture. Sneaker collecting gives everyone a different feeling of individuality or self expression. The Jordan “Eminem 4’s” are some of the hardest sneakers to buy. Sneaker collecting has become its own culture and constantly contributes to mainstream pop culture (The Daily Beast). Getting the newest thing is so prevalent and common in today’s society. I was once going to the grocery store and popped into a shoe store in the with my mom. As we were walking towards the store we saw grown men with chairs waiting outside of the store. I went in the store with my mom and looked around for a bit, she went to one of the employees and asked him why those guys were outside and he said they want to be first in line for the new Jordan’s that drop tomorrow. This is what people will do for sneakers. They will camp out of a store and stay overnight like it is Black Friday. Sneaker collecting has also become prevalent amongst celebrities who have such immense or large collections that they have whole rooms dedicated to them. Dj Khaled is one of the most interesting sneaker collectors, with around 10,000 pairs of shoes (Complex). That’s enough for everyone at Prep to have around 10 pairs of shoes. Finally all around us we are prompted to buy things by celebrities. Whether it’s an athlete in a commercial telling us to buy his deodorant or a model telling us to buy her lipstick. The sneaker culture was born out of this. This is one of the most important aspects of sneaker culture if you want to understand it. A song by the rap group Run DMC popularized the Adidas show with a song called, “My Adidas”.
