Recommended: Effects and causes of smoking

Today we see no country where there isn’t some percentage of people who smoke. The trend has spread widely over the years throughout the world. Smoking is a trend that did not start in the recent years but its history dates back to early 5026 BC. Surprisingly, it was first used just for the medicinal purposes as opium was considered to have some medical properties. (History of Smoking) One of the reasons behind this wide spread of smoking is the portrayal of smoking in movies and television, no doubt, this encouraged people to smoke and created a concept in young and immature minds that one “looks cool” when smokes. Smoking leads to many types of cancers and other horrific diseases. Tobacco smokers are very likely to move to stronger drugs. Many cigarette companies were successful in having a time for their product’s advertisement on television but with the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement in 1998 the TV adds for cigarette companies were banned. Smoking is a detrimental practice, which even though is carried out by individuals of their own accord, affects the surroundings and thus should be banned.
Ever since people started smoking researchers had been searching for its adverse effects to the human body. Fritz Lickint, in 1929 presented formal statistical evidence that cigarette smoking leads to lung cancer. This resulted in a movement in Nazi Germany, which was strongly against smoking. As smoking is considered the main cause of cancer, it has different kinds which can attack a human being anytime during the smoking period. The most common cancer which traps people is called lung cancer. About 90% of lung cancers these days are because of tobacco use. It is primarily correlated with the widespread abundance of cigarette smoking in the world. The tobacco industry has multiplied its production immediately prior to World War I. There was a typical 20 to 30 year lagging period between the initiation of cigarette smoking and the actual tumor formation in the lungs. Lung cancer is the cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. It occurs when cells in the lung start to grow rapidly in an uncontrolled manner. It is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in the world. During this time the tobacco companies would continue to say that cigarette smoking was not addictive and did not cause any type of cancer. Even with all evidence in the world today about tobacco causing cancer, Tobacco companies still remain the most profitable business in the world. Lung cancer is very common in both women and men. Women account for about 40 percent of the lung cancer cases in the world. Women who smoke are more than twice as likely to develop lung cancer as those of men who smoke (Tavor, 2005).

Scientists and researchers are representing a lot of evidence and research that has been done throughout the years showing that the secondhand smoke can also cause a lung cancer in nonsmokers. The study has been done of people who have been long exposed to secondhand smoke and it shows that 26 out of 33 published studies indicate a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. The study estimates that the people that were breathing secondhand smoke were 8 to 150 percent more likely to get lung cancer. The tobacco companies are trying to argue the facts and are still in serious debate about the health hazards of breathing a secondhand smoke. A lot of anti-smoking organizations are trying to turn smoking in public into a private activity that does not have to involve nonsmokers breathing secondhand smoke. What is even more important is that many of these organizations convinced a lot of smokers to cut back or quit completely. The problem of secondhand smoke is increasing because it is so common in our society. It makes secondhand smoke the third-ranking cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Mothers who live with a smoking spouse have to realize the ill effects of secondhand smoke on children even before they are born. The smoking components reach the developing fetus through the mother. Infants that are born in a smoking environment weigh less and have a weaker chance of becoming a fully developed child. Secondhand smoke leads to blood clots and damages arterial linings which are the two most leading factors in the development of heart disease.
