Smoking cigarettes is common among most adults in the United States, yet it is one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. Many people feel that smoking should be made illegal. The reason they may feel this way is because it is very harmful to your health and can lead to death. I strongly agree that cigarettes should be banned from being sold and produced because to me they’re considered a dangerous drug. The first reason that supports my claim of smoking cigarettes should be banned is that it is a “major cause to preventable and premature deaths”, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
Thousands of people die every day from smoking-related causes, even though the American Heart Association states that smoking is currently the most preventable cause of death in the United States. Smokers even have an increased risk of developing miscellaneous autoimmune diseases. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Millions of Americans have health problems caused by smoking. Smoking is a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer. It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia. Cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause more than 440,000 premature deaths each year in the United States.
Although many are aware of the dangers and warnings of smoking, they persist on to grasp a cigarette and puff away. Cigarettes and all tobacco products should be outlawed because they impair health, create risks for non-smokers, and destroy the environment. The hazardous health factors that are involved with cigarettes and tobacco products can easily harm and destroy a person’s general well-being. The National Cancer Institute has acknowledged these chemicals consisted in cigarettes and tobacco products, as the direct cause of cancer. Tobacco smoke for example, dwells with 4,000 chemicals, and at least 250 known to be dangerous to health (Quitting Smoking).

Tobacco is one of the most heavily used addictive products in the United States. Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemicals; approximately 250 are dangerously harmful to humans. Smoking is a major public health problem. All smokers face an increased risk of lung cancer, cardiovascular problems and many other disorders.

Cigarettes should be illegal because menthol cigarettes damaging to the public health of the United States, are like drugs, and are a main contender to the death toll in the United States. Menthol damaging to the public health of the United States. According to Neal L. Benowitz, MD and Jonathon M. Samet, MD in their article “The Threat of Menthol Cigarettes to U.S. Public Health”, the TPSAC states that menthol cigarettes are bad for the public cigarettes. For example, the number of smokers will increase in the United States because of the availability of menthol cigarettes (2180). Also, John Roberts states in his article “Cigarettes could be classified as drugs in US,” public documents exposed the tobacco companies’ motivation.
As one can easily see cigarettes have no long term positive side effects. Yes, they may create a short burst of stress relief but is all the long term stress really worth it? There are numerous possible health risks that can result from smoking. Not only that but, it’s a big waste of money and it ruins the environment. Overall, it should be very clear that cigarettes should be made illegal.
