Smoking has been a public health issue that has been receiving more attention in recent years with the smoking ban in restaurants and on hospital and school campuses. The reason for the ban on smoking in so many public places is not only to discourage smoking in general, but also to reduce the incidence of second hand smoke exposure. Tobacco use is the foremost cause of preventable death, disease, and disability in the United States (CDC). Infants and children are especially vulnerable to serious health issues from second hand smoke exposure. Infants who are regularly exposed to second hand smoke have a higher incidence of sudden infant death syndrome. Children who are regularly exposed to second hand smoke have more frequent ear infections and often develop asthma or upper respiratory infections (CDC). Adolescents who smoke have an associated risk for alcohol or substance use and high-risk sexual behavior. Exposure to second hand smoke increases risk …show more content…
Educating youth about the dangers of smoking is important in prevention, as well as in cessation. Smoking cessation programs are a valuable resource in the community to help adolescents quit smoking (health dept). Anti-smoking campaigns on television such as the “Truth” campaigns have proven to be effective in prevention of smoking in youth. Educate parents on the risk factors. Teaching parents the importance of knowing who their friends are, where they are and what they are doing. Teach parents to be vocal about the disapproval of tobacco use. Parents encouraging schools to enforce tobacco free campuses and policies for students and staff. Enforce movie age restrictions, discourage use of media that features smoking. Help adolescents cope with their problems and boost self-esteem. For the sensation seeking adolescent instruct parents on authoritative parenting
As per the American Heart Association in 2013, an expected 23 percent of grown-up men and 18 percent of grown-up ladies in the United States are smokers. What’s even more troubling is the prevalence of juvenile smoking in our society. juvenile smoking is a very real danger among U.S. youngsters and high schoolers. About 25 percent of U.S. secondary school understudies are smokers, and an extra 8 percent use smokeless tobacco items, for example, snuff and plunge. But what is most disheartening, is that 30 percent of all juvenile smokers will become addicted and suffer health related complications due to prolonged smoking. Numerous components play into a kid's choice to attempt tobacco. A craving to seem "cooler", more advanced, or to
Someone you might know, whether your grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, or even yourself, smokes or has smoked cigarettes. If you haven’t yourself, you’ve seen the effects and consequences one can encounter. Not always, but sometimes, you see the struggles and sickness your loved one can go through and you’d give anything to make that someone feel better. Technology has been on a rise and possibly figured out a safer way. Smoking an electronic cigarette or perhaps a traditional cigarette still provides the nicotine, but it’s possible one can change not just someone’s health for the better but others around them.
People throughout the time have been worried about some acts that people make; these acts are sometimes performed unconsciously or without realizing these are affecting they negatively affect others. Some reasons why this happens, they do not realize they are making someone uncomfortable, or they simply do not care about it. Smoking is one of these activities. For a long time, smoking in public places has been extremely popular regardless of age or gender. Many smokers believe they are free to smoke wherever and whenever they. Even if they realize the damage they are causing to themselves, which is a personal decision, when they smoke in public places they ignore the collective damage they are causing others. It has been claimed that despite not engaging in the activity themselves, “passive smokers suffer the same horrifying bad consequences as active smokers” in the form of second-hand smoke (Ecobichon & Wu, 1990, p. 43). Smoking is thus a dangerous activity that is becoming more and more popular in campus every day and is becoming a social and educational problem. Schools should ban smoking from their campus, and those that have should implement stricter methods of enforcing such rules.
I can still hear my dad’s words in my head, “if only I had quit sooner.” My dad decided to quit smoking cigarettes about eight years ago. He was fed up with letting his addiction to smoking since the age of fourteen, rule his life. Smoking had taken its toll on his health and it was an unnecessary financial burden on him and our family. My dad knew how bad smoking was for his health. He also knew how harmful secondhand smoke is, and thankfully, he chose not to smoke around his family.
Through public education, most elementary school kids can understand that smoking is bad for them and that cigarettes are additive. Cigarettes are addictive due to nicotine, a drug found in tobacco (“Quitting Smoking”, 2015). According to Schneider (2016), some of the greatest health problems associated with smoking include: lung cancer, other cancers, coronary heart disease, other heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, other vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), prenatal conditions, and sudden infant death syndrome. As stated by the Authority of the American Lung Association in an article titled “Health
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Many actions have been taken on vaping and cigarettes, such as only allowing people over or at the age of eighteen to buy the product and putting warning labels on products. The serious issue is there needs to be action applied to the fact that these products can kill a human being. There is a wide variety of policies trying to be passed for vaping and cigarettes. A vaping regulation is trying to pass making all vape companies to carry products similar to products back when vaping firs started. This could cause the vaping market crash, making people lose money, and most important jobs. Some actions should be taken on tobacco products because of the risk of getting cancer in it is high.
Smoking is not only affect for the smoker’s health, but also others around the smoker. People who do not smoke are affect just as much as those who are smoking. Which is due to second hand smoke, as the toxin smoke release in the air. Second hand smoke is harmful to non- smoker and causes more damage to their lung from breathing it. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “When a nonsmoker breathes in secondhand smoke, the body begins to metabolize or break down the nicotine that was in the smoke. During this process, a nicotine byproduct called cotinine is created. Exposure to nicotine and secondhand smoke can be measured by testing saliva, urine, or blood for the presence of cotinine.” According to "Surgeon General Adds To List of Smoking's Harms." “About 20.8 million people in the U.S. have died from smoking-related diseases since then, a toll the report puts at 10 times the number of Americans who have died in all of the nation's wars combined. The EPA estimates that secondhand smoking is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respitory infections in infants and children under 18 months of age yearly, which result in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are also more likely to have reduced lung function and symptoms like coughing, excess phlegm, and wheezing. Secondhand smoking can lead to a buildup of fluid in the middle ear, the most common cause of hospitalized children for an operation.
In recent years, smoking has started to take over the lives of many teenagers. The number of teenagers smoking has increased dramatically in the last several years. This is a major problem because smoking can lead to sickness and major diseases that can lead to death. Teens tend to participate in this while out of the presence of an adult figure. Although teens should not be smoking in the first place, an adult figure should be around to help insure that their children are doing the right things, even when they are behind sealed doors with their peers. Teenagers as they mature become a model for younger children and when they set the example of smoking can ruin their respectable image to the children that look up to them.
Second Hand Smoke In the 1950's and 60's scientists gave the people a lot of evidence on the deadly effects of smoking where the tobacco companies on the other hand tried to put the doubt in people’s minds through the campaigns to show that it is not all true. By the time people actually decided to take care of their health and finally saw how life-threatening smoking could be by real life examples, the tobacco companies already got rich from its sales. Nowadays, nobody doubts that “firsthand” smoke is deadly to your health and it causes lung cancer and heart disease in adults and asthma and bronchitis in children. Now the industry is onto the secondhand smoke. Scientists and researchers are representing a lot of evidence and research that has been done throughout the years showing that the secondhand smoke can also cause a lung cancer in nonsmokers. The study has been done of people who have been long exposed to secondhand smoke and it shows that 26 out of 33 published studies indicate a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. The study estimates that the people that were breathing secondhand smoke were 8 to 150 percent more likely to get lung cancer. The tobacco companies are trying to argue the facts and are still in serious debate about the health hazards of breathing a secondhand smoke. A lot of anti-smoking organizations are trying to turn smoking in public into a private activity that does not have to involve nonsmokers breathing secondhand smoke. What is even more important is that many of these organizations convinced a lot of smokers to cut back or quit completely. The problem of secondhand smoke is increasing because it is so common in our society. It makes secondhand smoke the third-ranking cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Mothers who live with a smoking spouse have to realize the ill effects of secondhand smoke on children even before they are born. The smoking components reach the developing fetus through the mother. Infants that are born in a smoking environment weigh less and have a weaker chance of becoming a fully developed child. Secondhand smoke leads to blood clots and damages arterial linings which are the two most leading factors in the development of heart disease. The tobacco companies got scared of the effect that the secondhand smoke research can do to the cigarette makers.
Cigarettes are one of the most common killers known to mankind. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year, and that number isn’t going to go down in less we do something about it. Smoking in the twentieth century killed only 100 million people, whereas a billion could die in our century. There are several more reasons why we should ban cigarettes, and I am going list them.
One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. Smoking Kills as the ad portrays this revolver and cigarettes as the bullets, and also lists the side effects of smoking. Cigarettes causes cancer, increases the risk of you getting a stroke, highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems. Nearly 16
Scientists and health officials have been arguing the detrimental effects smoking has on our health for many years. Smoking can lead to serious complications including asthma, pancreas, lung and stomach cancer due to the large number of carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) and other various substances added to it. It is a health hazard for both smokers and non-smokers and it is especially harmful to unborn babies. Although smokers claim that it helps them to relax and release stress, the negative aspects of the habit take over the positive. As it has been stressed by the scientists and experts, there are some very severe reasons of smoking but its crucial consequences should also be taken into consideration.
