I. Introduction
A. Personal connection
1. Do you smoke? Uncomfortable marking “yes” at doctors or on school forms.
2. Nicotine
B. Dangers of smoking, fatalities
1. “Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States” (Tobacco-Related Mortality n.p.).
2. More than 440,000 deaths annually, 49,400 deaths per year from secondhand smoke exposure (Tobacco-Related Mortality n.p.).
C. Cancer & other illnesses
1. “Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, and lung diseases (including emphysema, bronchitis, and chronic airway obstruction)” (Fast Facts n.p.).
2. "People smoke to get the addictive drug, nicotine, but the drug alone does not cause cancer. The delivery system, a cigarette full of hundreds of toxic chemicals that

E cigs have 9-450 times less cancer causing toxins than those found in cigarettes (Goniewicz n.p.).
2. Not exhaling smoke so there’s no secondhand smoke, secondhand vapor is not toxic
a. Study done using an electrostatic impactor measured the size of e cigarette vapor particles and compared it to those of cigarettes and hookah. E cigarettes were found to be .60 microns while others were .27 microns. E cigarette molecules cannot be absorbed through your lungs as easily. Also, the same chemicals are not in e cigarettes. (Bertholon n.p.).
b. Vapor tends to linger for about 11 seconds while cigarette smoke stays for 19 minutes (Bertholon n.p.).
3. E cigarettes reduce some adverse health effects caused by

University of Alberta study- “The majority of respondents reported that their general health (91%), smoker’s cough (97%), ability to exercise (84%), and sense of smell (80%) and taste (73%) were better since using e cigarettes…” (Heavner n.p.).
B. Effectiveness
1. Studies show that e cigs are more efficient at helping people quit than other cessation methods
a. 75% of the study group of 304 people who were all smokers ages 18 and up had all tried different methods of quitting smoking that had failed. After the study 81% of the subjects found e cigs to be a permanent solution to smoking. (Heavner n.p.)
b. Another study conducted by the University of Catania found that after 6 months half of the participants were able to reduce cigarette smoking by at least half their normal use and 25% of participants were able to quit smoking completely. (Polosa n.p.)
2. E cigarettes are cheaper if done right
a. Simple math
i. Cigarettes in New York are ~$12 a pack, a pack a day smoker can spend up to $84 a week on cigarettes ii. Decent starter kit for $40 online with $15 worth of juice for a week (with heavy vaping). In a year a person can spend around $4,400 a year on cigarettes and only spend $850 on e
E-cigs are less harmful than regular cigarettes. They mimic the sensations of traditional cigarettes but do not burn or create tobacco smoke or ashes. Nor do they contain tar, the main cause of cancer in smokers”. e cigs bring lots of health advantages to smokers they are less harmful for smokers. For example, E-cigs can help regular smokers cut down on smoking cigarettes. Regular smokers can smoke spend less on cigarettes and incest in having an E-cig. Some might say they are cheaper than spending more than 20 dollars or more on three boxes of cigarettes. They think that is is beneficial for smoker who are having hard time trying to quit smoking and this could be an alternative for them instead having to quit. E-cigs have a tremendous untapped potential to positively change the lives of adult smokers of traditional cigarettes. They are more accessible to kids under 18 and they can be very dangerous if you don’t know how
Plus, cigarette smoke can stain clothes, make your eyes sting and even aggravate allergies, which is hazardous to the health of bystanders. Simply put, many people do not like it. On the other hand, e-cigarette vapor is very different from cigarette smoke in the sense that it only a very subtle scent that most bystanders cannot even detect. Also, the scent lasts for only a few seconds.
...an be seen that they are a useful cessation technique- as stated previously 55% of people use e-cigarettes to quit. More research is needed into e-cigarettes to see if they are viable way to effectively stop smoking. There is a gap in research of long term effects of e-cigarettes due to e-cigarettes only being developed in 2004 4. Due to e-cigarettes only gaining popularity recently, few reliable studies with enough participants were able to be meta-analysed. It is also hard to give a reliable conclusion for this topic as there are different brands of e-cigarettes each containing varying concentrations of nicotine which wont change until they are regulated as medicinal products. At the moment the studies suggest that e-cigarettes are no better than other NRT’s. E-cigarettes could be a viable, useful and cost effective way to help reduce smoking- if they are regulated
For those who smoke cigarettes and will continue to do so, making a switch to smoking e-cigarettes would be a safer alternative. Goniewicz is a cancer researcher in the Department of Health Behavior at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York (Reuters, 2014). He and his colleagues conducted two studies of secondhand smoke exposure to e-cigarette vapors in a laboratory and the results were published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research (Reuters, 2014). In the first study they had an electronic machine that generated the vapors in an enclosed space and then they proceeded to measure the amount of nicotine and other potentially harmful gasses and particle that were in the air along with carbon monoxide that was generated. In the second study they used five men who smoked cigarettes on a regular basis and also smoked e-cigarettes. Each man entered a room and smoked his usual...
Before D.A.R.E., I was not mindful of the extensive damage cigarettes and other tobacco products cause. Cigarette smoke contains over 200 harmful chemicals, including rat poison. Because of nicotine, cigarettes are highly addictive. As a result, smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. It causes over 400,000 deaths annually.
There is a new trend hitting the market known as e-cigarettes, or “vaping.” Many people believe that e-cigarettes are better than traditional cigarettes, but research shows just how unhealthy and harmful e-cigarettes are for everyone. The FDA has not yet decided if e-cigarettes should be regulated as tobacco products. E-cigarettes are marketed to help people quit smoking and live a healthier, nonsmoking life. E-cigarettes are meant to help break the habit of smoking, but why are there so many “toxic chemicals” (gilger) in the vapor?
Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society. During 1995, approximately 2.1 million people in developed countries died as a result of smoking. One tobacco use is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States. Lung Cancer mortality are about 23 times higher for current male smokers and 13 times higher for current female smokers compared to a lifelong never-smoker.
Over time, the need for a cigarette increases and the harder it becomes to quit smoking. Some users turn to smoking alternatives in order to quit. The first thing a smoker will reach for is something that looks and feels similar to a normal cigarette. Electronic cigarettes or “e-cigs” were made to resemble the taste and feeling that a tobacco cigarette gives. These combustible cigarettes use water vapor combined with nicotine to re-create the high levels of tobacco.... ...
Every year cigarette smoking is responsible for 500,000 premature deaths (Nugel), you do not want to be just another statistic, do you? America’s first cash crop was tobacco. That means that tobacco has been around for a really long time. It was not until 1865, though, that cigarettes were sold commercially. They were sold to soldiers at the end of the Civil War (Dowshen). From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Smoking causes many other types of cancer, including cancers of the throat, mouth, nasal cavity, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and cervix, and even leukemia has been found linked to smoking. Also, people who smoke are up to six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than nonsmokers, and the risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked. Smoking also causes most cases of chronic obstructive lung disease. Also, approximately 49,400 deaths have been due to exposure to secondhand smoke. 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of diseases caused by exposure to second-hand smoke every year.
Almost everyone knows the health risks involved with smoking tobacco. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) give habitual smokers the most promising results of tobacco reduction or cessation. There are some that disagree with the use of e-cigarettes however; the benefits are exceptional for those looking to quit this habit. It significantly lowers their health risks related with smoking tobacco and, unlike cigarettes, it does not release any harmful toxic chemical substances. E-cigarettes are also more cost efficient than buying a pack of cigarettes. Although there are some that oppose the use of the economical e-cigarettes, the advantages are greater because
Everyone knows that cigarettes are horrible for your health and increase your risks of cancer. Not too long ago there was a big advertisement for e-cigarettes also known as vaping. It was advertised to be a healthier alternative and comparable to a nicotine patch to help you quit smoking. Many people began to question this new form of smoking and if it was really a safer alternative. Even though vaping is a safer alternative than smoking, vaping is not harmless because you are still getting nicotine, inhaling poison and risking a weaker immune system.
Tobacco use causes a number of diseases. Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, and causes lung diseases. Tobacco can lead to someone losing limbs and...
Lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Heart Disease, Stroke, Asthma Reproductive Effects in Women, Premature, Low Birth-Weight Babies, Diabetes, Blindness, Cataracts and Age- Related Macular Degeneration, do any of those sound appealing? Well, that’s the cause of smoking. When you smoke you cut your life short by 10 years or even more then that, so that’s a question why are they so easy to access? Why is their substitutes but are as just a dangerous? Anywhere you look you will probably see someone you don't know or even someone you know smoking a cigarette, and most the time it’s because they are addicted to them. So what’s in cigarettes? Why are people not worried about the outcomes of smoking, because it’s just lighting up, right? It’s just let me smoke this one then that’s it, I will quit? Right?
