In the debate “Smart Technology Is Making Us Dumb” presented by Intelligence Squared, are discussed both sides of this talking point; for and against. The first person arguing for the motion is Nicholas Carr. He begins his speech by giving a quick introduction about what is he going to talk about, so it can be easier to the public to follow his viewpoints. Carr made his arguments predominately through the use of logos by giving scientific information about how does the human brain works and talking about intelligence. He also gives several specific facts that rely on the audience’s intelligent thinking. Carr mentions facts about the capacity of the brain and how people overload information to their brains, constantly taking information and quickly pushing that information out. First, although David Weinberger presents a good point of view about “going deep into topics”, he does not present clarity due to his constant stuttering. He mentions and example that back to the 1980’s the information given was so limited because the only medium of information was the newspapers and that was all that you could have. It is true that now if we are reading something and we want to know more about that topic, we can easily do some research on the internet about it. But as Nicholas Carr mentioned before, people do not get smarter because that information quickly goes away. Genevieve Bell, who also is against the topic of the debate, presents several logos, as same as personal stories. But it is really hard to follow her points of views because of the speed of her speech goes by fast. In conclusion, the winners of the debate are Nicholas Carr and Andrew Keen arguing that undoubtedly smart technology is making us dumb. They presented well-organized arguments, interesting facts, and a livid usage of words and examples of this generation using technology in a dumb way of
