Abortion The debate over whether or not abortion should be a legal option continues to divide Americans long after the US Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision on Roe v. Wade declared the procedure a "fundamental right" on Jan. 22, 1973 (Roe v. Wade, 1973). In May 2013, Gallup found that 48% of Americans consider themselves pro-life and 45% say they are pro-choice (Gallup, accessed 2014). Abortions have been performed since as early as 1550 B.C. Greek philosopher Aristotle (384–322 B.C) wrote that "...when couples have children in excess, let abortion be procured before sense and life have begun..." (BBC, 2014).

If you are not having safe sex with your partner then you need to talk to your doctor about birth control. Birth Control can be in the form of a pill, shot, or injection girls receive to prevent pregnancy. There are many different forms, such as the birth control pill, Depo Provera, etc. Women should not be allowed to use abortion as a form of birth control or contraceptive. It is immoral to kill an unborn child for convenience (Sarah Terzo, 2013). Freakonomics co-author Steven Levitt, PhD, wrote that after abortion was legalized, “Conceptions rose by nearly 30 percent, but births actually fell by 6 percent, indicating that many women were using abortion as a method of birth control, a crude and drastic sort of insurance policy” (Megan McArdle, 2007). The Guttmacher Institute reported that half of all women having abortions every year have had at least one previous abortion (Guttmacher Institute, …show more content…

Women should have the option of giving their baby up for adoption instead of aborting them. The percentage of infants given up for adoption in the United States declined from 9% of those born before 1973 to 1% of those born between 1996 and 2002 (NCHS, 2009). Abortion is reducing the number of adoptable babies for couples or a women who are not able to produce children. Around 2.6 million American women were trying to adopt children as of 2002, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services (Child Welfare, 2011). As a result of the lack of women putting their children up for adoption, the number of US infant adoptions dropped from about 90,000 in 1971 to 18,000 in 2007 (Wendy Koch, 2013). The only way to 100 percent prevent an unplanned pregnancy is abstinence. Having sexual intercourse, even when contraceptive methods are used, carries with it the risk of a pregnancy (BBC, 2014). If women are not prepared to raise a child then they don’t need to have sex or put the child up for adoption. Killing an innocent human being is not the right option for an unplanned pregnancy because the baby didn’t do anything wrong. Having sex comes with the responsibility of possibly an unplanned pregnancy. Although you feel you are not ready for children you could at least put the child up for adoption, not kill
