Generally, individuals need seven to nine hours of sleep each night to function properly throughout the day, it is thought that over sixty-eight percent of people get less than eight hours of sleep (Hughes & Rogers, 2004). The circadian rhythm is what facilitates our sleep cycles and determines when we go to sleep; there is two types of sleep REM and Non-REM sleep (Plotnik & Kouyoumdjian, 2016). Non-REM sleep is typically the antecedent for REM sleep, here rapid eye movement occurs and this is where dreams occur (Plotnik & Kouyoumdjian, 2016). There are five stages of sleep that each person goes through each time they sleep, in non-REM sleep, there are four stages and REM is the fifth stage (Plotnik & Kouyoumdjian, 2016). If a nurse is sleep deprived and the brain is not functioning at the full capacity they may miss the signs of disease progression, or they may forget if they gave a medication (Johnson, 2006). Sleep deprivation has been seen to cause a decrease in attention span, decreased cognitive function and poor decision-making (Johnson, 2006). Studies have shows that the less sleep a nurse gets the more mistakes occur, most of which are not life threatening but more legal issues (Johnson, 2006). These mistakes may not be life threatening, however, it can have serious side effects that may last for the rest of their life or cause damage that requires surgery to fix (Johnson, 2006). Sleep deprivation also affects patient care in general, a tired or irritated nurse will lack bedside manner and be short or less thoughtful of patients needs (Johnson, 2009). A tired nurse leads to an increased incidence of patient frustration with healthcare treatment, this could lead to an individual not seeking care for fear of judgment or mistreatment from the staff (James, 2006). For example, if a nurse works a twelve-hour shift and gets the minimum amount of sleep (say seven hours), the nurse only has 5 hours to do other things like shower, eat, grocery shop or spend time with their family. In most cases, the cause of sleep deprivation is the inability to fall asleep and stay asleep. There are some homeopathic treatments for sleep that have been seen to work, for example not having any lights on close to bed time, not looking at computer or phone screens when going to bed and more (Johnson, 2006). Eating an appropriate diet is key, avoiding food with lots of sugar and caffeine before bed will help individuals fall asleep (Hughes & Rogers, 2004). There are also several pharmaceutical ways to help and individual fall asleep and stay asleep this includes melatonin. Melatonin has been seen to treat primary sleep disorders, sleep disorders that are not caused by other medical conditions effectively (Ferracioli, et al., 2013). This treatment worked for individuals with all different types of sleep issues and is often combined with other treatments to produce the best therapeutic effects (Ferracioli, et al., 2013). Melatonin does not have the ability to help the patients fall asleep rather it seems to work by allowing the patients to stay asleep once they fall asleep (Ferracioli, et al., 2013).
