Burns Skin is a very important feature of the human body. Skin covers and protects our entire body. Human skin is composed of two layers; the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outer layer of skin. This layer is much thinner than the dermis. The Dermis in the deep layer of skin that is much thicker and gives strength to the skin. This paper will discuss three types of burns that can happen to the skin and what effects they have. These types of burns are called first, second, and third degree burns.

The dermis is composed of many different structures such as sensory receptors which are nerve endings for temperature, pressure and touch. Hair follicles are found in the dermis, along with sweat and sebaceous glands. There are also many blood vessels found in the dermis. The blood vessels help to regulate body temperature. There are two layers that form the dermis. The first is the papillary layer; this layer is a thin superficial layer of the dermis that is responsible for fingerprints and forms of thick skin. The second layer of the dermis is the reticular layer. This layer is the thicker layer of the dermis that contains many protein fibers. This type of burn goes completely through the epidermis and partially into the dermis. Second degree burns cause severe pain, blistering and swelling. There can also be scarring in some cases. These burns could require medical attention and in some incidents. These burns can be treated at home however with over the counter burn remedies. Keeping a second degree burn clean and wrapped is important to keep from getting it infected.
Third- degree are the worst of the three burns. These burns are less painful than the second degree burns but only because this burn is completely through the epidermis and completely burned through the dermis. These burns destroy the nerve endings which makes it less painful. These burns result in severe scaring and require immediate medical attention. These burns should never be treated at home. The skin around this burn my look charred or white and waxy. These burns are typically caused either by fire or electrical burns.
Knowing the extent of a burn is important as well. The rule of nines helps determine if the burn is potentially critical. If a burn cover 10% of the body, then it is considered an emergency. The size of a palm is considered 1% of the body. If a person’s body is covered more than that 10% they are considered in critical condition. Skin is very important to our body.
