The sixties will always be a time looked back on with fond memories and great stories. Many things occurred during that time that shaped the way American culture. Rock & Roll, hippies, movements such as the civil rights, Woodstock, art, all new and fantastic things that were born out of this era and continue to bloom and influence our present day society. Although mostly left unsaid, drug use did play a major role throughout this time period and became almost an unspoken icon of the time. One of the more popularly known drugs is marijuana, then and now, and continues to become be more controversial as time progresses. Legalization has been a hot topic of discussion for a long period of time now, and although for many it is an intimidating thought that an illegal drug can now become legalized, we should consider what the benefits of marijuana could be for our country. Not only would this put an end to a seemingly bottomless debate, legalizing marijuana could be in the United States best interest recreationally and medically for a number of reasons. If we take into consideration what the benefits of legalization would bring we would find that it could significantly help us medically, legally, and socially, all of which greatly impact our society. Should medical marijuana be considered as a last resort or not considered at all? Due to the illegal aspect of marijuana many patients, along with their doctors, are skeptical of its productivity, however many cases have proven this skepticism to be false. Cancer is one of the most terminal, painful, and drawn out illnesses in existence. The legalization of marijuana in America is not going to be easy, and will be an adjustment for all American people since it has been illegal for so long. Although there will be continuous controversy if marijuana does become legalized, when all is said and done, America will greatly benefit from the decriminalization of this substance. The continuous motif presented is that it will tremendously benefit America in the areas of medicine, legality, and social stance.
