Michelangelo There was many obstacles and put backs when Michelangelo was painting the Sistine chapel. He met people that he argued and loved. The Sistine chapel is viewed as one of the seven wonders of the world. Michelangelo’s relations made while painting the Sistine Chapel had an effect on the process and even the final product. Bramante was one of the best architects at this time. He helped Michelangelo get the job, but he wanted to see him fail to think he was not a good artist and just a sculptor. Bramante thought that after Pope Julius II realized that he was not the artist, he wanted he would hire Bramante's prodigy Raphael. Although they were rivals, they dabbled in two different types of art mostly. Leonardo was a profound painter with interest in science, whereas Michelangelo found his way around sculptures. What this sentence is basically saying is that the whole painting of the Sistine chapel was meant to embody the ideas of the religious mentality that was embedded into the minds of the people during the renaissance period. When Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the celling of the Sistine chapel, he wanted it to solely represent the ideals and teachings of the church, however Michelangelo portrayed some of his own thoughts into the art. Examples of this can be found all over the painting the last testament and in the book titled Michelangelo A Life in Six Masterpieces by Miles J. Unger, upon examination of the painting it is possible to see on the bottom right hand corner the Pope himself with a snake wrapped around him and being dragged to hell. Historians believed that Michelangelo painted the Pope in this way because he did not agree with the way Pope Julius II was running the church, Michelangelo and the Pope often disagreed on many different occasions whether it be on religion or just the way he talked to Michelangelo. In 1520, the first Medici pope, Leo X, son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, passed the Medici project to Michelangelo, who was at the time working under pressure on his designs for the façade of San Lorenzo, the Medici Church. Michelangelo had constructed a wooden model of the projected design in the end of 1526. Michelangelo was worried about taking on the new commission, which would involve designing the Chapel with all the monuments. The construction had to match Brunelleschi’s Sacristy on the other side of the transept in the Basilica of San Lorenzo. He wanted everything about the new building; the appearance, supporting elements, conception of space, architectonic decoration and ornament, to be original and unexpected.

At a scale of nearly five thousand and eight hundred square feet and almost seventy feet above the ground, this would be an incredible task for the artist. He faces many challenges, mentally and physically, during the process, but still finishes the ceiling in an incredibly short amount of time considering the size of his work. Michelangelo is renowned for his moody temper and reclusive lifestyle. Most people find him to be an extremely difficult person, due partially to his lack of concern for anyone but himself, and to his undaunted stubborn nature. The one man with whom he will despise and contend with all his life was Pope Julius II; he is also the man who commissions him to paint the ceiling. Ross King's purpose in writing this book is to detail Michelangelo's magnificent struggle with personal, political, and artistic difficulties during the painting of the Sistine ceiling. He also gives an engaging portrait of society and politics during the early sixteenth century.
Though the Renaissance era included all of Europe, Italy was the cradle of the movement. The cities of Florence, Rome and Venice were of great importance to this period. Major artists created art mainly in these three. As the center of Italy, Rome held the residence of the Pope and many other important factors. Throughout history, the Roman Catholic Church was very insistent on promoting their ideas. During this time, they used artists and their creativity to promote the Bible and other aspects of their beliefs. Artists were paid, or commissioned by patrons (often the Pope) to create art they wanted. One of the most ambitious patrons was Pope Julius II, who realized the impact visual images had on people’s ideas (Kleiner, 599). Pope Julius II was called the warring Pope, because he often went and involved himself in wars. He also held very humanistic ideas. Because of this, Michelangelo’s relationship to Pope Julius II was very different from his relationship with Pope Leo X, who succeeded Julius II. Julius, because of his adaptions to humanistic thoughts, he let Michelangelo express himself to the fullest, even when forcing him to paint the Sistine Chapel. Leo X, however, was very critical of everything Michelangelo set out upon. This resulted a strained relationship, and eventually abandonment of projects that were supposed to be completed. It is clear that Pope Julius II had a liking for Michelangelo, while the Medici’s looked on him as a type of lowly artist subject to their will.
Art, by definition, is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. Throughout history, one way that art has been used is to reflect a multitude of ideas and beliefs. Christian beliefs and ideas have been portrayed in artwork since the beginning of Christianity, although, it was not always acceptable to do so. The idea of the final judgement is a Christian idea that has been displayed in art repeatedly in a variety of ways. Michelangelo’s fresco the Last Judgment (1536-1541) is a piece that visualizes this idea. Since the time it was finished, this significant piece found in the Sistine Chapel has been continuously critiqued and analyzed. Many Christians struggle to interpret the event of a final judgment after reading it through Scripture. In analyzing Michelangelo’s piece, it is similar difficult to determine what he exactly meant to portray and what the various part of his masterpiece represent exactly. Many have examined this piece and made different regarding what exactly the various figures and objects are supposed to represent. The diverse interpretations of this work further shows the idea that when Christian ideas are reflected through artwork, it is hard to ascertain exactly what an artist intended to demonstrate. In addition, the controversies surrounding this piece represent the idea that when Christian ideas are revealed through art, there is potential for disagreement regarding what should and should not be included in Christian art. Michelangelo’s Last Judgment is just an example of what results when Christianity is brought into art.
As time went on Michelangelo goes on the create some of the best Statues and paintings known to man today. Aside from his “artistic” life Michelangelo was also an architect and a poet, he designed buildings such as the Laurentian Library and the Medici Chapel, but his biggest accomplishment came in 1546, became the head architect of Peter’s Basilica. Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance times, as well as one of the greatest of all time. He did was a painter, a sculptor as well as an architect, excelling in all areas from a young age. Michelangelo’s art was a symbol of the Florence people’s cultural and political power and superiority. Michelangelo thought of himself as a divine being, meaning he thought he was perfection and no one could ever compare. To this day through, in terms of his art, this may hold some truth depending mostly on opinion. He created some of the most magnificent, and most sought after pieces of all time. Some of them are still around today for us to witness including Michelangelo’s Pieta, and one of his most famous Michelangelo’s David.
Michelangelo was born in a time in which the church had a great influence on most things that people did in their everyday life. He grew up in a wealthy family and was exposed to people of high position. One of the ways he did this was by crafting a lot of works: “The world remained so full of his works, that it may be affirmed right truly that no craftsmen ever worked more than he did.” (377) Vasari praises Donatello’s various works throughout the biography. The collection of works that Vasari mentions, suggests that Donatello was more than just a sculptor because he produced and sold many designs. This was similar to a baker or merchant in Renaissance Florence that was constantly selling his or her own product to others. Furthermore, Donatello’s many works were studied and praised by future Renaissance artists. One of the most influential and well known is Michelangelo Buonarroti. At the end of the biography, Vasari leaves the reader with an intriguing quote by Don Vincenzo Borghini that Borghini stated in a book where he collected drawings from esteemed artists. Borghini states that “Either the spirit of Donato works in Buonarroto, or that of Buonarotto began by working in Donato.” (378). Donatello also had other students such as Bertoldo who “he left all his work to be completed by” (377). Donatello inspired and had other students work under him and taught them his craft.
