Music of the Sistine Chapel
Sistine chapel choir consisted of 24male singers who sang in four parts which were a breakdown of the voice into soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.And other higher voice were heard sing by men in the falsetto which was consisted of six per part.the ideal according to the church music of catholic liturgical tradition was to have unaccompanied voice singing directly from heart of singer to the ear of GOD.

Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven both flourished in their compositions of classical music; however, their genre of music differed considerably. Born in 1556, Giovanni Gabrieli was an Italian composer who worked for the St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. During his time there, he composed works for separate choirs for both vocal and instrumental performers. One of his most famous pieces comes from his Sacrae Symphoniae completed in 1597; the Sonata Pian e Forte. Gabrieli was both a composer and organist in Renaissance and Baroque transitional period which caused elements of both periods to be demonstrated within his compositions. With instrumental music becoming more popular, it was becoming quite common during this time to have a composer who also played an instrument, especially the piano or organ. Sonata Pian e Forte gained fame from being a work that demonstrated a few characteristics and ideas about sound that had yet to be seen or often used.
Ziggy Marley once said, “God is like the sun. When the sun shines, it shines for everyone. God is for everyone.” In the same way, Abbot Suger built the Basilica of St. Denis so that sunlight would flood throughout the building and symbolize the power of God inviting visitors into the cathedral. The Basilica of St. Denis was an artistic response to the rise of the Catholic Church’s power for it was modeled to be a physical representation of heaven, which the church heavily preached upon. (Thesis) As the basilica represented the shift from Romanesque architecture to Gothic, Abbot Suger introduced new techniques that transformed cathedrals to look more spacious and “heavenly”. (Map Statement #1-Art History) By allowing sunlight to come through the large windows, Abbot Suger instilled the Neo-Platonic idea that the sun was the physical representation of God. (Map Statement #2 –Philosophy) Also, at that time, the church was rising in power, so the new structural style of the basilica brought more converts and eventually more power to the church. The Papal Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican, or simply St Peter’s Basilica is one of the largest church’s in the world with a total area of 44000 square meter, with 219 square meter of the basilica itself. (Dupre’, J., 2001, p.65) Located in Vatican City, the papal enclave within Rome, St Peter’s Basilica is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture. There were 4 main architects who contributed to the project Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Construction began on the new basilica on 18 April 1506 under Julius II, who also laid the first stone and was completed on 1615 under Paul V.
Even though both musicians treated the existing pieces in infinitely different ways, I think it is apparent what both musicians were trying to achieve; self-acceptance. Both musicians were searching for an affirmation of their own individual style. By looking back at musicians previous to them they were able to satisfy their need to pay respect, not only, to what others have done but at the same time develop their own style and, even if subtly, push the envelope.
In polyphonic music the voices split and you can hear at least two melodies sounding simultaneously. It’s at this point in history when music split and went in two directions: sacred, and secular music. At first music was still sacred and the polyphony was used only to ornament pre-existing chant music. These same fanciful developments were also seen in the architecture of the church and the art from this time period. Music began to take on a different purpose when the Renaissance arrived and an entirely new era of music was born. Beginning in the beginning of the 1400’s musicians and composers were now able to be employed and Court chapels became the most common form of patronage, where groups of paid musicians and clerics regularly composed, entertained, and performed for a particular ruler. Prior to this point in history it was basically impossible to make a living as a musician. But now music could be chosen for a long time career
appreciation. Because of these composers and musicians, music was enjoyed by the public and revered by the church. Because of their creativity and their willingness to take musical risks, these composers were the fathers of the Renaissance, the rebirth, the life of the vigorous and intellectual activity, the beginning of music.
Brunelleschi's Chapel In no other time was Roman influence in architecture more profound than in 15th century Florence. Filippo Brunelleschi's Pazzi Chapel revived interest in Roman architecture. Like Masaccio's The Holy Trinity, the Pazzi Chapel implemented numerous classical architectural elements. Like Masaccio's frescoes, the chapel is a highlight of the Renaissance. The chapel, however, was a Roman avatar.
The psalm composed by Scarlatti, called Laetatus sum, Be Glad, (Psalm 121), is set for four voices, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, a continuo accompaniment, and solo soprano and alto lines. Art is a medium through which emotions and ideas can be conveyed. Art is appreciated for its aesthetic value, as well as its ability to evoke emotions and both of these functions can be seen in the art displayed in chapels and museums around the world. To create an emotional connection, art in chapels lacks labels so the focus is strictly on the story portrayed in the painting or sculpture. The opposite stands true for art in museums where the purpose is to understand the art therefore labels are placed, however art in museums lacks the emotional connection that is present in chapels. Art is in museums to be understood and to be appreciated for its aesthetic value, art is in chapels for the emotional connection it creates for its visitors.
