Biography Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in the town of Edinburgh, Scotland on the 22nd of May in the year 1859. Arthur was raised in a Irish-Catholic family by Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary Doyle. The Doyle family had gained much respect from the prominent position that they had held within the art world. In contrast to his father’s continuous alcoholism, Arthur’s mother, Mary, managed to remain a positive influence in Arthur’s life. Being an educated woman who had an appreciation for the arts, Mary promoted the education of her children in all artistic aspects, especially literature. Her constant encouragement planted what would soon become Arthur’s inspirations for many literary works. Within a few years, Charles and Mary decided to send Arthur to England to receive education at a Jesuit school called Hodder Place. He attended the school until the year, 1870. After spending his years at Hodder Place, Arthur decided to further his education by studying at Stonyhurst College. His educational experience was unfortunately far from glamorous. While attending the boarding school, he underwent constant bullying and endured brutal punishment authorized by the school. Amidst such hardships, Arthur found sanctuary in his unprecedented talent for story-telling. After graduating from Stonyhurst College in 1876, it was expected that Arthur would take up a career in the arts like his parents, however, he instead decided to pursue a newfound career in the medical field at the University of Edinburgh. At the university, Arthur met Professor Dr. Joseph Bell, a mentor and a cherished companion. Joseph Bell would later become inspiration for Arthur’s greatest fictional character, Sherlock Holmes. Using their talents, they eventually resolve the matter as they always do. It is thanks to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that such intriguing stories exist. The massive impact that Arthur has made can still be seen today through media. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a talented writer who had provided the world with much more than just his grand tales.
