The R.M.S Titanic, at the time was one of the largest ships of all time. The actual meaning of Titanic is of exceptional strength, size, or power. Perfect name for a ship that was declared unsinkable, at that point in time. "Striking the water was like a thousand knives being driven into one's body. The temperature was 28 degrees, four degrees below freezing." -Charles Lightoller, Second Officer aboard Titanic. From the disaster to the movie, the sinking of the Titanic remains one of the most famous tragedies in history. The ocean has icebergs and ships may hit them but the preparation for this situation is the key.
The most common tell-tale sign for a lookout on iceberg watch is the surf along the waterline of the iceberg. On a calm night such as that of 14 April 1912, this tell-tale clue would not have been present. Without it, the lookouts did not sight the iceberg until it was quite close. The Titanic was one of the most incredible ship liners ever built by man. Titanic was equipped with three main engines—two reciprocating four-cylinder, triple-expansion steam engines and one centrally placed low-pressure Parsons turbine—each driving a propeller. It provided a good combination of performance and speed. (“RMS Titanic.”)

Delays had occurred as a result of the Olympics collision with the HMS Hawke in September 1911 and in February the Olympic also lost a propeller. The owners wanted to see the Olympic operational before the Titanic. Also that year there was a coal strike. A severe problem for any transatlantic liner because ships like the Titanic would consume over 600 tons of coal a day. To partially solve the problem, coal was taken from other ships like the Adriatic and Oceanic to stock up the coal bunkers for the Titanic's voyage.(Titanic’s Maiden
The titanic was a gigantic ship. It was the biggest, newest, and advanced ship during its time. The titanic was built in Belfast with the newest and best technology. Then after its completion it would travel to New York. During the tragedy of the Titanic the engineers had a key role on saving people. Although the tragedy of the titanic was sad it taught us many lessons on preventing such a thing again. Although the titanic has sunk to the bottom of the ocean it will never be forgotten.
On 14 April, four days into the crossing and about 375 miles south of Newfoundland, she hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time. The Titanic made an impact, two hours and 40 minutes later, the boat was lost in the ocean forever. Just like Jack Jill, and Bob Blob. They tried to get on a rescue boat and they were being selfish and wanted to be the first people to get a lifeboat so they knew they would survive and so Tyrone T. lll stayed behind. So then they got on a lifeboat and it ended up sinking/freezing because of how many people were on it. It was the most well known ship for all
They were told “This is the Titanic, the unsinkable ship,” but what were they saying as the ship broke in two and began to sink. Did they all still believe that nothing could sink the magnificent Titanic? Or was the reality of the ship finally “sinking” in? These are questions today that people are still asking. The sinking of the Titanic was a tragic accident that still affects culture today.
April 14, 1912, the Titanic set sail for a maiden voyage. Some of the people on board never thought that it would be goodbye forever. The Titanic was heading to New York City from Southampton, England. Why does the Titanic now lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean? Historians believe that the Titanic sank because of human error. They believe that it was Captain Smith, the lookouts in the crows nest, and Thomas Andrews fault.
We have all heard about the Titanic. Either we have watched the romance movie or done our research in a different way. No matter where we get our information from we know the biggest parts of the tragedy. The ship Titanic crashed into an iceberg on a cold April night on the Atlantic Ocean while sailing its first trip. But haven’t you ever wanted to know more details about? Maybe how the people who were on it and survived? How could the situation be prevented? Couldn’t they have saved more people? Well in the book “A Night to Remember” it has details on the Titanic you have probably never thought of knowing. While reading the first chapter some parts really caught my attention. One was when people felt the jolt from the collision with the ice berg people didn’t suspect what tragedy was to come. A girl named Marguerite Frolicher, who was accompanying her father on a business trip, woke up with a jump since she was half asleep she was thinking about ‘little white lake ferries’ landing sloppily which made her laugh and thought to herself “Isn’t it funny…we’re landing!”. They really did...
On May the 7th 1915 the Lusitania sank, taking with it the lives of one thousand, two hundred and one people including ninety-one children and thirty-one infants. Despite the fact that it was the largest and fastest ship at that time, the German torpedo still found its mark off the South Coast of Ireland while the ship was travelling between the United States and England. The failure to prevent the tragedy despite the warnings given, the actions (or lack thereof) of the Admiralty and the neglect in ensuring that the lifeboat system and the ship itself would offer maximum protection; puts the primary blame unto the British Admiralty and the Cunard Company.
The story behind the titanic is controversial, some people have seen the movie but they do not know the real facts behind it. This essay is going to talk about the main factors behind the Titanic’s failure, the design, the manufacturer, materials, the crew, survivors, Cost of building the ship, the engine, as well as human errors, and the cause from different point of views.
The ship, R.M.S Titanic, has been popular several different times in a little over 100 years. The first time in April 1912 when it first sailed for North America. This great ship was said to be unsinkable. Many errors led to the major tragedy of the Titanic, including the life boats were not all there or filled as much as they should have been, the ship tried to go full speed to break the iceberg, and the Californian ship did not respond the Carpathia had saved the rest.
Damage beyond the hull was also witnessed that allowed for the influx of water. Whenever the forepeak tank was damaged, “six watertight compartments flooded with water, causing the ship to sink faster than it should have,” (Bassett). The Titanic, being the largest ship at this time, should have stayed afloat for two to three days after striking the iceberg. Within three hours, the Titanic sank, which never should have
On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 a.m. after striking an iceberg, with the loss of more than 1, 500 passengers and crew. Thomas Andrews knew the ship’s flaws when he designed her nevertheless, Captain Smith knew of the collision between the ship and the iceberg. However, left all faith in the “Unsinkable Titanic.”
The Titanic was one of three 'Olympic Class' liners commissioned by the White Star Line to be built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. These ships were the industrial marvels of their age. Titanic was to be the biggest, fastest and most luxurious ship yet, and was supposed to be unsinkable. "I took passage on the Titanic for I thought it would be a safe steamship and I had heard it could not sink.” (Passenger Margaret Devaney). Titanic had four elevators, a heated swimming pool, a gym, two libraries, and two barber shops, which was very impressive for a ship of that era. This extraordinary ship was nicknamed “Ship of Dreams”. On board there were suites for many different types of passengers which included millionaires, silent movie stars, school teachers and emigrants, in search of a better life in the North America. This ship was very large especially for the time and included separate areas for rich and poor. The Titanic was planned to make a journey from Southampton, England to New York, USA.
The Titanic (otherwise known as the unsinkable ship) sank on April 14, 1912. Originally evidence led to the conclusion that the sinking was caused by hitting an iceberg at approximately 11:40 pm. After about one-hundred years people began asking, was it an iceberg that caused the titanic to sink? While the ship truly did collide with an iceberg the crash wasn't the main reason for the sinking of the ship. The iceberg did have a small role in the sinking, as well as multiple other small things, but the main cause for the ship’s descent was a fire that began before the ship first took off on April 10th.
When the Titanic struck an iceberg, it was only a matter of time before the ship would be completely under water. “Water was pouring through a great gash about two feet above the floor plates. This was no slow leak; the ship was open to the sea; in ten minutes there were eight feet of water in No. 6.” As the water quickly filled the damaged ship passengers still laid asleep in their cabins while some looked for answers. “The shock of the collision had been so slight that some were not awakened by it.” As people are awoken and instructed by deckhands for women and children to board the lifeboats. “The boats are more heavily loaded now, for
The Titanic set voyage on April 1912 to New York. The Titanic and its sister ships, Olympia and Britannic were said to be virtually unsinkable by a magazine article, not the White Star Line. The Titanic was the second ship to set sail on its maiden voyage out of the three sister ships. The Titanic had been built a lot differently than most of the ships back then. For example, a normal ship was built with three funnels but the Titanic had four. The fourth funnel did not serve the same purpose like the other three; its use was for steam to be released from the kitchen. Another example was that the Titanic was the biggest ship at the time. The ship had received ice warnings at least six different times from ships but Captain Smith had ignored
