Recent resources state that poverty affects the lives of many children in the world. Families are not able to find and keep a stable job with a stable income. Services and workshops that aim to help poverty are too expensive and often the services do not help the parents because it is hard to change a parent’s mind and thinking. There is no specific cause of poverty but for the majority of families having a low income, dealing with stress, and being a single parent puts children and families more at risk. Families are receiving support from government and there are non-profit organizations that are trying to help families as well including Canada Food Bank, Soup Kitchens, and Vancouver Big Brothers.

In 2016, research shows that 17.0% of children under the age of one live in low-income households in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2017). The increase of single parents with low income and part time jobs make it difficult for families to buy necessities. In the U.S. “between the years 1970 and 2012, the proportion of children growing up in single-parent families more than doubled to about 35 percent” (Gestwicki, 2016, p. 32). Divorces are often the reason for single parents. Single parent families are also the result of the rising birthrate among unmarried women especially at ages 20 – 29 where the percentage of high birth rate reaches 62% (Gestwicki, 2016, p. 33). Single parents are not the cause of child poverty because many single parent families do a great job at raising their child and maintaining a stable job and income but some single parent families face trouble in finding a stable income and job. Parents need to find daycares, buy food, buy clothing, necessities, and pay housing. Rough estimate shows that about 42% of children in poverty live with their mother while 25.5% of children live with their father (Young, 2017). The responsibilities and care for a child becomes
