Culture is everything that we speak and do (O'Neil, 2006). People are not born with cultures, cultures are learned (Sagepub, N.A). Cultural diversity is where many people from different cultures or ethnic groups are in a society (racismnoway, N.A). Cultural diversity is a result of globalisation (UNEP & UNESCO, 2002).
The modern world with cultures gives insight of how cultural diversity helps to integrate a nation. Especially, how different human thoughts that contain individual cultures become a need for community’s survival and blooming purposes (Hedaya, 2013). Major developments in the society can occur due to the tensions caused by multicultural (Smolicz, 1999). Major developments are such as incorporating cultures into all development

It has been said that culture is a component resulting in conflict (LeBaron, 2003). It is dependent on the degree of cultural diversity among the parties involved (Leeds, N.A). In some studies, it is argued that culture is the main cause of conflict that is going to happen in the future, and cultural differences are not easily resolved and compromised especially matters relating to religion. Take Singapore as an example. Their cultural diversity is not strong as they have a higher percentage of Chinese as compared to Malay and Indians. Some even say that Singapore is not a multi-cultural country. (Nair, 2012). Singaporeans from different cultures can work together (Snodgrass, 2013). Students are taught from young the different cultures (MOE, 2014). However, they are still racist among people from a different culture (Fenn, 2014) (M, 2014). Racist is an element of divisive (Gates, 2004). Furthermore, conflicts and riots can still happen. For example, the recent Little India Riot. It is due to a Chinese Singaporean who accidentally killed an Indian person by bus. It has also been viewed that if the civil defence and police are not Chinese and are Indians, the riots will be eased by them (Air-conditioned Nation, …show more content…
For example, the dominance of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) through Middle East which displayed violence and fears to people. It has divided the states of Syria and Iraq and scare away the European colonialists (Armstrong, 2014). ISIS is a religious group that meticulously choose their own beliefs (Wood, 2015). This is known as a social construction where a group of people agreeing to the same set of beliefs (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, 2008). They follow unique way of Islam where their beliefs is about the journey to the Judgement Day. (Wood, 2015). They have a territorial base to organise terrorism against the United States and its allies (Stanford Report,
Multiculturalism implies the co-existence of cultural identities includes racial, religious, styles of thinking and political views, within the same border of state. Race is an important factor to some when it comes to what is considered as “multicultural” since it define people physical appearance and if people within a geographical region look different, the area is diverse. However, race is a socially
The concept culture have some difficult meanings. One of them is culture as in music, preforming, theatre and so. The other meaning of it is culture as in Peoples Identity. It tells something about who you are, where you come from, and what you believe in, in this way, we can see that People have different culture and its all about where you live and where you have been raised.
What is a culture? Culture is anything consisting of a group and system. For example, culture consists of art, literature, humans, history, religion, and so on. There are many various cultures placed worldwide here on Earth. Not every culture is the same. Some cultures today still hunt and gather food like their ancestors before them. Some cultures today are more industrial and focus on progress through the world. Culture has shaped individual groups into what they are and become in the world. Although there are different ways in which culture can shape certain groups, there are a few factors that remain the same.
Culture is the unique way to act and think within a people from a certain place. It’s the way the people hold their beliefs, what they hold valuable, how they speak and even how they write. Culture is how people relate and act with one another within a certain space. Culture can vary from place to place such as city, state, country or continent.
In its simplest definitions, the concept of multiculturalism having its roots in theories of cultural pluralism and diversity, can be defined as a normative response to manage the challenges arising from the ever growing multicultural make up of urban population caused by immigration or de facto plurality of cultures in both plural and mono cultural societies. The challenges of multicultural urban societies have been attributed to the politics of cultural differences characterized by the difference in value system of dominant mono cultural groups and specific communities containing multiple ethnicities and, also finding possible ways to co-exist among such differences. The politics of difference is largely reflected in sharing and constitution
...al analysis of modern society's tendencies. The author requests that rather than operate in conflict, cultures, even those that contrast each other, should act together as a continuous entity, rather than be splintered by differences that divide.
Cultural diversity is the way of life common to a group of people. It consists of values, attitudes, and beliefs that influence their traditions and behavior. From my experiences, I feel that in my community, every family had a similar culture and even if there were differences from family to family, everyone could relate to the made aspects of culture. I understand that culture is more than just ethnicity; however, coming from such a small community from my exposure to culture everyone had similar backgrounds. As a teacher, my goal is to be able to know my learners and fully understand how all my students are diverse, and my ultimate goal is to be able to accommodate all of their
Throughout the years, humans have shaped the world and many societies have developed different cultural patterns. By studying different cultures, we learn how to collaborate with different societies and we learn how to survive and adapt to environmental changes. Culture is the way of life of a society and is composed of shared values and beliefs. Every culture has different cultural elements that are vital to one’s survival in a certain place.
Culture can be defined as a pattern of ideas, customs and a system of predefined behavior shared by a group of common people. Culture distinguishes groups of people from one another and it contributes to the richness and uniqueness of each group of people based on the patterns or customs that they follow. Cultural distinction may include some or all the listed characteristic subset language, age, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic class, sexual orientation, religion and spiritual beliefs, educational background geographic origin, personal background and even group history (Gibson, Lisanne 2010.)
In his article “The Failure of Multiculturalism”, Kenan Malik uses the diverse European culture to study and explain the irony of multiculturalism. He defines multiculturalism as “the embrace of an inclusive, diverse society” (Malik 21). Integration between cultures is practically inevitable, but several nations view this as a threat towards upholding their culture. Due to this, many countries have made attempts at properly integrating new people and ideas while trying to prevent the degradation of their own. This can result in unjust regulations and the reverse effect of an intended multicultural society.
Cultures are a system of knowledge shared by a relatively large group of people. It includes a system of shared beliefs, values, symbols, and behaviors. No two cultures are the same. We are living in a mixed culture setting where a wide variety of nationalities exist together. I interview my friend from class, Cynthia Wilder, who is Jamaican and compared myself to her since I am an Indian. Although Indian and Jamaican cultures are not the same, they share many things in common.
This research project is centered upon the idea that individuals, specifically those in second and third world countries, need to protect their cultural identity by combating the imperialism of western, dominant cultures. According to research, some reasons behind this imperialism are war, totalitarianism, tourism, the need to fit in, peer pressure, immigration, and globalization. These reasons are prevalent in today’s society and can be seen worldwide. Some solutions to the problem that I found in my research are to create a multicultural society that embraces diversity, encouraging a multilingual society along with preserving dying languages, and protecting smaller villages and towns from tourism, industrialization, and globalization. While
Another concept that is actively is mentioned in the literature that I cannot bypass is a hybridization. “Global village” or a creation of a new culture is a common idea among future of global culture.” Hybridization is an antidote to the cultural differentialism”( Abderrahman Hassi and Giovanna Storti) Creating and mixing different cultures may be a suggestion that could end many conflicts one of which is a racism. Looking at the bigger picture we can see that race created culture and therefore by blending together demographic areas we might become stronger and united globalized culture. However, by doing that it might destroy definition of ethnicity and cultural identity. New does not always mean better for the community or the future. There is a big chance that it may resolve in a homogenization whereas by demolishing boundaries, dominant factor might surpass already instinct culture and its history. However, it may seem as a strong point for modern view, this may merge with a principles of nationalism and challenge national borders (Abderrahman Hassi and Giovanna Storti). Another factor that is well argued is diaspora. By preserving culture in a migrated country, it emerges a diversity and a exploration of a larger culture. In most modern countries we can see a perfect example is schools in where students are taught in their mother taught despite being in a foreign
Our world is constantly changing and it requires a society that is well versed in understanding the problems deriving from culture differences and tolerance of one another’s beliefs and perceptions. We are dealing with systemic problems in education, economic, government, religion and culture differences.
For an extensive period of time, sociologists and anthropologists have attempted to define culture. It is well known, that such concept is one with various, intrinsic definitions and subject to multiple interpretations, therefore being extremely laborious to define; laborious, to the extent that: “Despite a century of efforts to define culture adequately, there was in the early 1990s no agreement among anthropologists regarding its nature.” (Apte (1994: 2001), as cited in Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics). Nonetheless, the classical definition states that: “Culture… is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.” (Sir Edward
