Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” are two short stories from disdainful time periods. Each story shows us the journeys of the rich and the wise. The two stories analyze the styles of the authors and the dark and depressing themes of the stories.
The story by Shirley Jackson is a tale of a stoning of an innocent woman. This story strongly disagrees with the modern traditional values. The whole story is marked with symbolism, which is used by the author to illustrate the evil and power. Jackson shows us how to show human tendency to continue traditions is both meaningless and harmful.
