During the two novels the authors exhibit the storyline in a way that brings their audience to their feet. In the Book Thief Markus Zaursak allows the readers to experience the emotions that are felt throughout the book creating a realistic aspect. On the other hand F scottfitzgeralds the great Gatsby shows his readers more of a story. Both novels express dynamic qualities that expresses the similarities and differences in a fashionable way through tone, voice and characters just to name a few.
The Great Gatsby contrasts the Book Thief in many different ways. They both have multiple instances where the two talk about holding on to secrets, whether it is for themselves or for others. Secrets play a big role in concluding the two books; without

In addition, the two express similarities through the narrators. The narrators are mentioned in the stories though, they are not the main characters. Having the narrators be others than the main character is a benefit to the overall idea. This is because it has a perspective that allows the readers to form their own opinions, without the influence of one or the other. The next major key point would be the idea of symbolism. Symbolism has a strong meaning that drives the book in a way that shows the underlying meaning of the novels. This is important for the reason being, in the end it can explain the overall meaning that makes the book complete. The next one goes along with the one previously mentioned-love. Love is what keeps the books alive. With any book that was written there is always some form of love. The authors keep this particular format because it shows the emotions that humans have for one another. Death is more than just a saying in the books. Death plays a crucial role when explaining the catastrophes the occurs throughout the duration of the novels. Death is something that has to occur in order for the …show more content…
To start off, in The Great Gatsby, secrets lie beneath the depths of the characters. Jay Gatsby for example, is one who hides his true feelings behind the lies. His love for Daisy is inevitable and is primarily seen through the readers perspective. In The Book Thief, the idea of secrets is physically seen promptly through other characters. A major aspect in the book happens when the Nazis come in to town and the community has to go in to hiding. At this point, Max is a character who is no considered a Jew, therfore, if he is found he could potientially see the face of death. War is a fundamental drive that is known throughout the novels. The Book Thief is based upon the historical event- the holocaust lending it to be the focal point in the novel. With this being said, the whole plot line will be created around the event of World War II. As far as it goes in The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby mentions World War I as it pertains to the past. He served in the war for a few terms and when he came back that is when the story picks up. Time period is demonstrated through the events of the past. During the time of The Great Gatsby, it has taken place in the 1920’s era, in New York. The time and setting says it how it was this was time of prohibition and illegal gambling, in which Gatsby was guilty of. In the beginning, it briefly explains that he came from the Midwest but other than that the
F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, “The Great Gatsby”, and Baz Luhrmann’s film, “The Great Gatsby”, both have similarities and contrasts between the two of them. The Great Gatsby is a novel and film taken place in the 1920s filled with wild parties, mysterious people, The American Dream, and most of all, love. There are several things that can be compared between the novel and film; such as the characters and the setting. There are also contrasts between the two as well; which is mainly involving the character Nick.
Hawthorne and Fitzgerald, two great American romantics, display new attitudes towards nature, humanity, and society within their novels. The novels The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby are very similar with their adjacent themes, motifs, and symbols. The comparison between these two literary pieces show the transition from adultery to ability, societal standards during the chosen time periods, and good vs. evil.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald also known under his writer’s name, F. Scott Fitzgerald, is revered as a famous American novelist for his writing masterpieces in the 1920’s and 1930’s. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about his extravagant lifestyle in America that his wife, Zelda, their friends, and him lived during that era. In fact, a lot of his novels and essays were based off of real-life situations with exaggerated plots and twists. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels were the readers looking glass into his tragic life that resulted in sad endings in his books, and ultimately his own life.
During the course of the semester, I covered many topics during this class. These topics consist of; The Great Gatsby, The topic of Rationalism, Romanticism/transcendentalism, The crucible, and Fahrenheit 451. In this assignment, I was asked to summarise each topic with a single thing I could use to describe the meaning of the topic. I chose to summarise each topic in terms of a single quote. I chose quotes because of the open-mindedness of quotes. Everyone sees quotes differently, and they have different meanings for everyone. They are often used to express opinions, or public knowledge led to educate and inspire others.
In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) The character McMurphy as played by Jack Nicholson, McMurphy’s is a criminal who is troubled and keeps being defiant. Instead of pleading guilty, McMurphy pleads insanity and then lands inside a mental hospital. Murphy reasons that being imprisoned within the hospital will be just as bad as being locked up in prison until he starts enjoying being within by messing around with other staff and patients. In the staff, McMurphy continuously irritates Nurse Ratched. You can see how it builds up to a control problem between the inmates and staff. Nurse Ratched is seen as the “institution” and it is McMurphy’s whole goal to rebel against that institution that she makes herself out to be.The other inmates view McMurphy like he is god. He gives the inmates reason to
Everyone has secrets; everyone has something they want to keep unnoticed. As with every aspect of life, some secrets are meant to be kept private just as some secrets will inevitably be revealed. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there are multiple characters whose lives are filled with concealed truths. Many of the characters, including the infamous Gatsby with his strained fantasies and the brute Tom with his distorted ideals, shroud their corruptions in cloaks of deceit and buried secrets. The characters of Fitzgerald’s classic novel all have secrets that they would rather remain unknown. Through the characters of The Great Gatsby, it is visible that the true meaning of a secret is something that is kept hidden from other people.
As the case with most “Novel to Movie” adaptations, screenwriters for films will make minor, and sometimes drastic, adjustments to the original text in order to increase drama and to reach modern audiences. Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film interpretation of The Great Gatsby followed the 1925 classic great plot quite accurately, with minor deviations. However, Luhrmann made some notable differences to the characters and settings of The Great Gatsby in order for the story to relate to the current generation and to intensity the plot
Book Analysis F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of "The Great Gatsby," reveals many principles about today's society and the "American dream. " One of the biggest fears in today's world is the fear of not fitting into society. People of all age groups and backgrounds share this fear. Many individuals believe that to receive somebody's affection, they must assimilate into that person's society. In the story, Jay Gatsby pursues the American dream and his passion for being happy only to come to a tragedy and total loss.
Within the debate on who is to be crowned the “Great American Novel,” a valid factor that may be taken into consideration is how ideals in culture become altered with an evolving environment, and therefore, the argument can be made on the behalf of The Great Gatsby to be considered for the title. Due to its more recent ideological concepts, the novel addresses American ideals that are not fully developed or addressed at all within The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These ideals can be boiled down to primarily two concepts: the fully-developed American dream of richness and upper-class goals, and consumerism in the industrialization of America. While Mark Twain’s piece touches on the “American dream” with Huck beginning the book off with $6,000
In today’s world without a little thought people do not realize how similar things can be. One thought or idea can be altered for you to believe that two things are different, when really they are not. For instance, how a book written in 1925 could have a very similar story line as a movie directed in 2004. It could be a coincidence that The Notebook directed by Nick Cassavetes has the exact same love story as F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, or it could be considered a complete knockoff. A similarity within these two works are how a poor man falls in love with a wealthier woman at a young age. Also the woman both move on to wealthier men when there is an obstacle that forces their previous relationships
Often times, films are depicted differently from the detailed and very explicit writing of authors in most novels. “The Great Gatsby”, whether referring to the novel or the film, is a story which depicts themes of love and lust, dishonesty, persistence, and prosperity. These overarching themes are exhibited in both the film and the novel through the words and actions of the main/essential characters. On the contrary, some of the key elements in the story can be illustrated in different fashion when comparing the film to the novel. These differences and also similarities can be shown through the character analysis, the T.J. Eckleburg billboard, and the third party thrown by Gatsby.
Both sets of characters from the two films, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, constitute the characters of Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, in their own ways. Luhrmann’s film, The Great Gatsby brings the characters to life using both the real names and similar attitudes as in the book, whereas Allen’s Midnight in Paris uses completely different characters to enliven the novel.
Thirdly, a good subject to analyze would be Gatsby himself. Gatsby himself is an illusion. He made his fortune off of organized crime, and is from new money. His “past” is a front, fabricated to appeal to his love, Daisy. Everything he says he is, is false, a part of a larger front to hide what he really comes from. His name, his fortune, his past is in an effort to appeal to Daisy. An interesting twist throughout the book is that Gatsby, seems to be seen as a better person by Nick than the other characters presented to us as readers. Gatsby is a symbol of the American dream. A rags to riches story. His love, Daisy, in contrast, is from an old money background. Gatsby himself, however, seems to be a good person. Gatsby is presented as a
As an American citizen we seem to make presumption that all cultures are different from ours, and some might even call those cultures weird. Americans fail to realize just how similar we are to these “weird” cultures. By reading Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe and The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald , it makes the reader realize how similar the African culture is from the American culture. There 's those obvious differences we already knew about with the two cultures, but readers can learn that not just American culture value men and give them advantages, but many cultures including 1900 's African culture. In both books we come across two main characters that is portrayed as being more superior compared to others. Okonkwo, main
For example, Leonardo Dicaprio’s character of Gatsby was focused on emotions. I enjoyed that Redford was very calm and cool about everything and the way he approached the character but, Dicaprio made such an open and outgoing character which made the movie more entertaining. DiCaprio captured Gatsby’s intensity and charm and brought out the crazy mood swings and took his character and the audience to a more emotional place. Both Robert Redford and Leonardo DiCaprio had their own way of approaching the character and really selling Gatsby but Leonardo DiCaprios was better. Another reason I prefer the 2013 version of the 74’ is because of the bond and friendship Nick Carraway played by Tobey Maguire and Gatsby had MaGuire was able to bring a true and strong meaning to their friendship that made his and Gatsby’s bond feel organic and real and you were able to see that clearly unlike with Waterston where you just saw the friendship and didn’t feel any emotion. But I felt much more of a connection with his character than I did with the ’74 version. If you have read the book and seen the original film, then you understood where Nick was coming from in the scene where he was furious with Gatsby, after he believe he killed Myrtle only to find out that Gatsby wasn’t the one driving the car that killed Mrytle, MaGuire, did a fantastic job in showing his emotions and how what happened to Myrtle and the person that killed Myrtle affected him. I loved that Nick was a lot more real in this movie. He didn’t hold back and he gave the audience a reaction that anyone in life would have had if they were in his situation. Nick had the major issue of being dragged into situations because of people he knows. I thought Maguire did a great job of showing ...
