As Nick and Jay Gatsby drove into New York City, Gatsby described himself to Nick. There are three facts Gatsby told Nick on their way to New York City. The three facts Gatsby tells us is that he studied at Oxford, son of a wealthy family from the Midwest and that he was a World War One hero. These “facts” from Gatsby seem to be very false because he says that he comes from the Midwest but then when Nick says where in the Midwest, Gatsby says California. California is not located in the Midwest so we know that fact is false. The facts Gatsby tells us, makes people like Nick even more suspicious. The Great Gatsby is narrated by Nick Carraway. Nick tells the story of the things he experienced when he moved to New York City to work in the bonds business. The reader is told the story, which includes Nick’s perception and opinion in certain events. The reader wants to believe that Nick is a reliable narrator and he seems to be one, in the beginning. Nick describes himself as “one of the few honest people that I have ever known” (Fitzgerald, 59). Although, Nick thinks this of himself, there are many things in the story that hint otherwise. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Nick is not a reliable narrator. This is seen through his negative judgments of others, his friendship with Gatsby, and because he does not know everything about Daisy and Gatsby.
Jay Gatsby is the main character in The Great Gatsby. He is the mysterious character that the story revolves around. Nick is his neighbor that gets invited to Gatsby’s party that set in on Gatsby being a mysterious person that has so many people talking about him and talking about different stories about Gatsby that unravel how big of a mystery Gatsby is. In The Great Gatsby, “Gatsby’s notoriety, spread about by the hundreds who had accepted his hospitality and so become authorities on his past, had increased all summer until he fell just short of being news” (Fitzgerald 105). In chapter six, the real truth is revealed about the great Gatsby. The stories of the mysterious Gatsby in the parties were not true. The stories about Gatsby also went around New York, which made Nick ask Gatsby about his past ("The Great Gatsby," Fitzgerald). Nick also asked about Gatsby’s past hoping Nick would finally hear the truth. Different personalities cause people to either get along or to clash. Some people get along and have close friendships, while others cannot stand to be in the same room with someone that they despise. Such as Gatsby and Tom despise each other, but Daisy and Nick are very fond of each other, maybe too fond. In the Great Gatsby there are many different characters and ways they act. Everyone has there own different attitude and personality. Some people may be compassionate and caring and others careless about what is going on around them. One of the traits of Gatsby that makes him truly great is his remarkable capacity for hope. He has faith that what he desires will come to him if he works hard enough. He does not comprehend the cruelty and danger that is the rest of the world. Gatsby, while a man of questionable morals, is as wide-eyed and innocent as a small child in his views of the world. These ideals are evident in Nick’s narration and in the words spoken by the other characters, including Gatsby himself.
At the beginning of the book Nick sees Gatsby as a mysterious shady man. In the beginning of the chapter Nick somewhat resents Gatsby. In Nick’s opinion Gatsby was the representation of “…everything for which I have unaffected scorn.” (Fitzgerald 2). Nick sees Gatsby as what he hates the most in life, rich folk. No one truly knows the true story behind Gatsby and his wealth. This adds an intriguing aspect to the life of Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lies in order to uphold his image. For example, Gatsby states that he is an Oxford man, however the reader finds that this is not entirely true. The social class that Gatsby strive to be a part of is well educated and proper. Gatsby creates an omission lie, that he is an oxford man. This is because Gatsby refrained from telling the whole truth, Gatsby leaves out certain information to hide the full truth. This deceives characters making them believe that he is well educated and fits in with the high society. In addition Gatsby lied to Nick about how he acquired his money. Gatsby is not so great because he is a liar. From the very start Gatsby is said to be an alumnus from Oxford, who fought in WWI, hunted big game, and had parents from the Midwest. He even justifies himself when Nicks asks and Gatsby pulls out a picture of him at Oxford and a WWI medal that he carried around in his pocket. He even changed his name, James Gatz to Jay Gatsby, but why? “James Gatz – that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (6). Gatsby reveals that his parties and success were all created to catch Daisy’s attention, hoping that she would notice and fall in love with him. This strongly supports the overall theme that Fitzgerald gives, since Gatsby is relying on his wealth and popularity to make him look desirable, mostly for someone specific. Nick complies with his request and brings the two together. He now blatantly knows that Gatsby’s wealth is all fake, yet once again he does not change his perspective of him. Later in the story, he also discovers that Gatsby was falsely taking the blame for a murder that Daisy had done. This is shocking to both the reader and Nick. However, by the end of the novel, Nick tells of how great Gatsby was and how he is the only person who has seen the true side of him. Nick Carroway is not a very judgmental person, in fact, he himself states that he withholds judgment so that he can get the entire story out of the person to whom he is listening. To say that Nick is both approving and disapproving is not suspiring, for Nick rarely looks at things from only one perspective. Nick finds Gatsby to be ignorantly honest, in that Gatsby could not fathom the idea of saying something without really meaning it. He respects Gatsby for his determination to fit in with the East Egg crowd, though Gatsby does not realize that he does not really fit in with them. On the other hand, Nick sees Gatsby to be excessively flashy and, in the words of Holden Caulfield, 'phony.' Gatsby's whole life is a lie from the moment he left behind the name James Gatz and became Jay Gatsby. Gatsby lies about his past to try to have people perceive him as an 'old money' guy when that really is not necessary. Gatsby's valiant efforts to lure Daisy are respectable, yet they show Gatsby's failure to accept reality and give up on his long lost dream.
Presuming that the narration in The Great Gatsby is valid is naïve. Nick uses positive connotation to describe Gatsby and has a negative attitude towards nearly every other character in the novel. Nick describes Gatsby using positive adjectives; even before Gatsby’s character is established, Nick describes Gatsby as, “gorgeous” (Fitzgerald 2), further typifying Nick’s non-objectivity towards Gatsby. “Yet the limitations of Nick’s character do have narrative consequences, for Nick sometimes sees only part of the meaning hat a scene carries… sometimes even strains ‘judgments’ out of inconclusive evidence” (Cartwright). While these subtle adjectives go unnoticed by the reader, they give a subconscious outlook; before the reader has a chance to form an opinion of the characters, Nick uses adjectives and tones to

The way Gatsby’s perceives himself is made clear as Nick explains: “The truth was Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God… he must be about His Father’s business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty” (Fitzgerald 98). From the beginning Gatsby puts himself beside God, believing he is capable of achieving the impossible and being what he sees as great. Gatsby blinds himself of reality by idolizing this valueless way of life, ultimately guiding him to a corrupt lifestyle. From the beginning of The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Nick Carraway is developed as a reliable narrator. His honesty and sense of duty are established as he remarks on his own objectivity and willingness to withhold judgment. However, as the book progresses and Nick’s relationship with Jay Gatsby grows more intimate, it is revealed that Nick is not as reliable as previously thought when it comes to Gatsby. Nick perceives Gatsby as pure and blameless, although much of Gatsby's persona is false.
