The Friendship of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Franklin Pierce
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts. At an early age, Nathaniel lost his father due to a disease he got while at sea. After that time, Hawthorne had an accident with his leg that hindered his walking for a period of time which enabled him to venture into his creative writing side. In 1821, Hawthorne began attending Bowdoin College. He started attending college when he was the young age of 17 (Whitney).
Franklin Pierce was born on November 3, 1804 in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. Pierce was very fortunate growing up. He had a father that tried his best to mold Pierce into a leader and point him in the right direction. Pierce’s father realized that he could not teach the academics needed to young Nathaniel, therefore he was sent to study and improve his academics rather than enlist in the army as his siblings did. Pierce and Hawthorne had several different life paths to choose from, but no matter what they chose they remained close and loyal as friends. Both gentlemen took on responsibilities within society, began married life, raising a family, and prospering their careers. During these trials, they were loyal to each other. Pierce decide to become a candidate to become the fourteenth President of the United States. Nathaniel Hawthorne was Franklin’s encouragement, support and loyal friend. To express this loyalty for Pierce, he wrote a biography of him entitled, The Life of Franklin Pierce, that was published in 1852 (Nathaniel). This biography was written before Franklin Pierce became president. It included facts about Pierce that elated up to his election and Nathaniel Hawthorne was proud that he had the opportunity to share about such a prestige
