Kofi Annan said, “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family” but not in the society of Fahrenheit 451 or the world we live in today. The two societies are similar in the way that social status is focused on and that many people hide their guilty pleasures due to what others think. A difference between the societies is that thinking is punished for in Fahrenheit 451 while in the world today you're encouraged to think by elders but discouraged by your peers. An example of similarities is how the society today and the society of Fahrenheit 451 focused on social status. Knowledge “facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education.” ”School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored.” School is not even being taught in Fahrenheit 451 and people are not being disciplined. This is contrast so much from the society today because most all parents ‘force’ kids to go to school. “‘Do you ever read the books you burn?’ He laughed. ‘That’s against the law!’” Reading was against the law in their minds. In schools today you have to read do to the curriculum. The experience of education was non-existent in the town of Fahrenheit 451 which is different then the world we live in today. Fahrenheit 451’s society can compare and contrast to the society today. Social status where the firemen and famous are on top while the thinkers and the ‘nobodies’ are on the bottom. Guilty pleasures of the book readers, in Fahrenheit 451, and the people in the society today are not being shared do to fear. Knowledge was the biggest difference from Fahrenheit 451 to the society today. In conclusion, the society today is very similar to the society of Fahrenheit
