Dance and gymnastics are sports which take a lot of determination and commitment that lead to amazing results. It becomes frustrating because many people think dance and gymnastics are identical sports, but they have many similarities and differences.
Dance is more complicated than most people think. A dancer has to meet many requirements in order to wow their audience, whilst performing. A dancer should blend their movements with the music. No matter the style, whether it be jazz, hip hop or even tap, an exceptional dancer always becomes one with the music. Being graceful is also a key component to succeed as a dancer. Thumping around the stage is not appealing to an audience, even if those watching have no prior dance experience. When a dancer floats effortlessly across the room the audience is in awe. Unlike gymnastics, dancers need to be technically trained. Pointed toes, stretched knees, relaxed shoulders and squared hips make an entire routine look flawless. Gymnasts also do not need emotions while performing their routines. Without emotions a dance is boring and redundant. Emotions tell a story or give a dance the attitude the choreographer wanted to show through the piece. Also, dance has many different styles including, jazz, ballet and contemporary, to name a few, whereas gymnastics has different types of gymnastics. When it comes to competitions, dance is very different from gymnastics. When awards are given, the top 5

Now they may have some similarities but they have more differences. They both involve major strength and flexibility and they both secretly steal moves from the other. Between these two sports, there are differences galore. These differences make each sport individual and let those who participate, express who they are. Even though people often confuse gymnastics and dance, they both have similarities and differences that make them equally amazing
The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
The winning team in a dance competition is determined by a panel of judges. Some may argue that because the teams are not facing off head to head, dance is not qualified as a sport. However, a deeper look into the sport of gymnastics validates otherwise. There is no doubt gymnastics is an extremely difficult sport, which is why it is presented along with many other sports in the Olympics. The scores of the competitors are solely determined on the scores that the panel of judges decides to give them. There is a strict set of guidelines, which the judges follow in order to determine their scores. These same rules apply at dance competitions, so why would one qualify and not the other? Furthermore, multiple tests have been conducted at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, ranking dancers from Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance among professional athletes in terms of overall athleticism (Wallace 1). This educated viewers and broke the misconceived stereotype that dancers are not
Dance is something that has been around for a very long time and throughout the years, has brought together many different cultures. Different forms of dance formed in different parts of the world and they all have different, languages, values, customs, etc. Dance in one part of the world could have a completely different value in another part of the world. And different styles have been created from past knowledge.
Cheerleading and Gymnastics are different sports that are capable of multiple things. Cheerleading was an all boy sport, became popular after sometime, and it also became a competitive sport that still takes place today. Gymnastics is another sport that came from ancient Greek, was brought to the United States, and to this day became one of the most attractive sports.
For the dancer, music and choreography are paramount. The music guides the dancer, and the moves express the music. However, the dance has to start from somewhere.
The words “competitive dance” alone say it all. The whole purpose of dancing at competitions is to compete against other dance teams in order to try and win an award. Without the competition aspect, dance should not be considered a sport. Yes, it is a physical activity that involves a lot of strength and time that needs to be dedicated to it. But without the competitive aspect, it would not be a sport. To be a sport, a team has to compete against another team for the enjoyment and entertainment of others (Sport, 1). This is the goal of any competitive dancer or dance team. For something to be a sport, it specifically needs to be in a competition setting as well as have the purpose behind it of entertaining. People do not go to a football or basketball game to sit there and watch two teams just play an equal and fair game with no activity and no winner. If all games and performances in the sports realm were like this there would be no one there to watch them because they would not be entertaining. With competitive dance, there is always two or more teams or dancers going up against each other to get the win. And a major reason why dancers compete is to entertain, because they love the satisfaction of the crowd being pleased by their performance. “I dance because it feels good. Also, applause,” said Helen Phelan, a freelance dancer
...dancers are as dedicated to their passion as other athletes are to theirs. Mastering technique and training take years to accomplish.
Dance generally consists of physical movements that require us to use many parts of our body (Olympic Review, 1991 August No. 286). Basic dance or rhythmic and patterned movements are identical throughout the world, in all time and in all cultures, and is a fundamental element of our behavior (Hanley, 1991, p. 385). Since dance is
Although, dance requires some natural skill it also requires dedication. Natural ability and talent will only get dancers so far. Dancers must work hard and persevere. Dancers give years of their lives plus their sweat, tears and sometimes blood to have the honor and pleasure of performing on stage. Dance takes dedication, commitment and passion from the dancer. The only one who can stop you from reaching your dance goals is you! Practice, persistence and determination pay off. Dancers that dedicate themselves countless hours every day, week, and month to become more confident and have more toned dedication and skill. So clearly, there is a question in people's minds about whether dance is a sport or an art. The dance community consists of many different factions and styles. You can dance at a club for fun, as a hobby, as a serious passion, or you can dance as a career. To be able to dance well, one needs to have flexibility, strength, stamina, endurance, and a love for what they do. I can see why people think that dance is not a sport. I know we make it look easy, but as many people don’t know, it’s really quite difficult. When you really take a look and see how many things football and dance have in common, you will see that dance truly is a sport. Dancers work just as hard as any football player in the United States. To conclude my thoughts my favorite quote in the world, “If dance were any
us to one conclusion: Ballet is a sport. The fact that Ballet is also an art does not compromise this
Dance is a universal expression. People can easily tell stories or express how they feel through this form of art. Just like an instrument, dancing is how a dancer makes music. In general dancing has changed throughout time. How we dance now is not how it was done in the fifties and sixties. Like music dance evolves according to what is popular. Something is constantly being added to all of the different genres of dance. Although there are many different styles of dances in the world, there are some that are more popular: Zumba, Ballet, Salsa, and the most popular, Hip Hop.
My most favorite activities include entertaining an audience. Dance has been a part of my life for years. A way to grow and prosper into a better individual, dance involves training and skill. Taking jazz, tap, ballet and lyrical, dance has been a safe home for me to go to in need. During school and outside of school at Robin Dawn Academy, dance helps me in distress as well as work to becoming a better athlete. Cheerleading is also one of my favorite activities as well. Joining my sophomore year, cheerleading involves stamina and practice. Learning how to stunt and cheer on my
Preparing for competition is easier said than done, you need a passion to complete the task. Competition is extremely stressful, but amazing at the same time. It?s a process of mixed emotions, not knowing if it?s importance will have a meaning in the end. Having practice six times a week allows us to work on our jumps, cheers, dances, tumbling, and the most difficult, stunting. Just the counts and lifting people in the air is traumatic enough, but repeating it over and over again it gets strenuous. Dancing is relaxing when you have counts to them, but when you have to learn the dance to the music people get confused and don?t know when to leave to the next formation. Team members start getting fed up with each other at the closing stages of practice, it?s just a natural human reaction after practicing with the same fifteen to twenty girls for three hours.
Have you ever thought about the history of dance, or how long human life has known it? Dance has been here longer than we actually think. We can take dance back all the way to 600 BC to Now. Dance has made very big changes overtime. It went from doing it in honor for only the dead or religious situations to now just doing it for fun. The way or different moves have also changed over this big course in time. It ways and moves have changed, and the outfits used to perform these different types of dances. There has been clean and dirty dancing all along, some of things in those dances have stayed, others haven’t. Dance has been a very great thing and will stay being a great thing during human life because it expresses a lot. It expresses itself, and a person can express their feelings, in the different kind of moves. It does take time to get to know the moves but you can get through.
Ballet is one of the most popular types of dance. It is known for its grace and elegance. Ballet is a very disciplined style of dance and may take many years to develop the proper technique. Ballet is the foundation for many other types of dance.
