The review of literature pertaining to the present study “Siddha Medicinal Plants” is discussed below.
INTRODUCTION:
Plants have been an exemplary source of medicine from ancient times. Ayurveda and other Indian literature mentions the use of plants in treatment of various ailments of humans (Grover et al., 2002). Throughout the centuries medicinal plants formed the mainstay of the tribal practitioners for treatment.( Rahmatullah et al., 2012).
Medicinal plant’s interest has been re-emerging health aid was fuelled by the cost- rising of drugs-prescription in the maintenance of personal health and well-being also in the bioprospecting of plant-derived new drugs (Hoareau and DaSilva, 1999). About 45,000 plant species are found in India and among them, several thousands have been claimed to possess the medicinal properties (Grover et al., 2002).
Traditionally plants have been used as the source of medicine in India by indigenous people of different ethnic groups inhabiting various terrains for the control of various ailments afflicting human and their domestic animals (Panghal et al., 2010).Generally, medicinal plants contains inherent active ingredients used to cure disease or relieve pain (Okigbo et al., 2008).

Around 100 plant species have contributed potentially to modern drugs and the medicinal plants properties could be based on the antioxidant, antimicrobial, antipyretic effects of the phytochemicals in them (Cowman, 1999; Adesokan et al., 2008) such as phytochemicals (alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and terpenes) present in active extracts, also tannins and flavonoids are thought to be a cause for antidiarrhoeal activity by increasing colonic water and electrolyte reabsorption (Palombo et al., 2006).
