Should cigarette smoking be banned?
Smoking is an expensive habit. People who smoke cigarettes can spend as much as $2,500 a year on them (Singletary). Smoking is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco or cannabis, is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. The most common method of smoking today is through cigarettes. Cigarettes remain primarily industrially manufactured, but they can be hand-rolled from loose tobacco and paper. Today we are more aware on how bad smoking is for our well-being. Smoking causes health problems, negative effects on physical appearance, and reduces athletic performance. Smoking should be banned because it has been revealed to be harmful to the human body.
First of all, cigarette smoking is the inhalation of gases and hydrocarbon vapors generated by slowly burning tobacco in cigarettes (Mosby). Carbon monoxide, nicotine, and tar are harmful substances found in cigarettes. Breathing in smoke can be more hazardous to a passive smoker who inhales from being close to an active smoker. I don’t assume anyone will want their toddlers to breath in the damaging substances. Cigarette smoke is very addictive and is considered more dangerous than pipe or cigar smoke because it is less irritating, and therefore more likely to be inhaled. The arguments against smoking are well-known, smoking has been shown to be a danger to health. Heart diseases, bronchitis, and lung cancel have all been interrelated. Someone that smokes has a higher risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack. Around 11 percent of all strokes are linked to smoking (mailonline). To eliminate and help quit the use of cigarettes, there’s now an Electric Cigarette wherein there’s no Nicotine on it, which is not addicted and helps lessen the use of Cigarette users. However the smoke is not as powerful as an ordinary cigarette, so 3 month rehabilitation programs is helpful in most cases. Smokers’ will claim that it helps relax them and it releases stress, but the negative traits of smoking outweighs the positive. Smoking is a health hazard for smokers and non-smokers. Smokers should have the right to choose what to do with their own health but they should respect non-smokers. Overall, smoking is a waste of money, and if people can quit, that’s the best thing. Everyone will live a longer, healthier life with their loved ones, which is why I think cigarettes should be banned.
