Vaccines; Not a Choice When at school, students should feel safe, comfortable, and able to learn. What if each day, students were exposed to vaccine preventable diseases because of others religious freedoms? This is happening in communities all across the world. Despite the fact that children are able to receive other schooling outside of public schools, parents and religious groups are rallying for religious exemptions. All links of vaccine problems have been scientifically abolished, yet people continue to put not only the immunity of their entire community at risk, but the safety of those who cannot be vaccinated. The fact is, the chemicals thimerosal, formaldehyde, and aluminum can be harmful, but the amounts used in vaccines are not (“Should Any”). This sparks a debate over Religion vs Science; however, public schools are not based upon religion. It is not unreasonable for a school that is available to all children, to require all vaccinations that have been tested in government- funded studies, and shown no link to any diseases (Leblanc). Although the request of the school may violate religious beliefs, it does not pose any major medical threat. The decision to avoid vaccinations is fear based without any proof. Some religions are opposed to the chemicals found in the vaccines and how they go against the beliefs of the church. Other religions do not support the actual receiving of the vaccine and only support ways of natural immunity. This is the main cause for religious exemptions, and although some claim that asking a parent to vaccinate “violates religious freedom” (Huff), public schools are not the place for the practice of religion.
