Ever since I was in Elementary School I have wanted to go to a college or university and compete against other schools in sports. Recently I have leaned more towards going somewhere on a scholarship for basketball or track & field, and as I have looked through schools that can give me a good education and also make me a good athlete. I have also gone through the news lately and seen all the sports news about Universities, such as the Arizona Wildcats, that have been accused of paying up-and-coming freshman players to join their teams and organizations, which is not allowed in the NCAA. After hearing accusations of teams paying players it has made me wonder, should colleges or universities be allowed to pay student-athletes to play for them? I personally think that student athletes should not be paid to play because many of these students are already at these schools on scholarships that pay for them to be …show more content…

The first group of people are the ones who say, “Yes! Student-athletes should be paid”, and the two main reasons or opinions they have that make them believe they should be paid. One reason is because many of the division 1 athletes have their names advertised to bring people to games, or images of them are used for products. An example of this is that leading up to March Madness the NCAA will spend millions of dollars of advertising that shows many of the top teams and the students that play for them, and these commercials bring in a lot of revenue from people who decide to watch because of the advertising. Another reason is student athletes roughly spend 40 hours a week practicing, which is as much as someone working a full time job from nine to five, five days a week at a regular job; so these athletes spend more time playing sports than part-time workers, and according to NCAA guidelines student-athletes are prohibited from having jobs while their sport is in
