Ever since I was in Elementary School I have wanted to go to a college or university and compete against other schools in sports. Recently I have leaned more towards going somewhere on a scholarship for basketball or track & field, and as I have looked through schools that can give me a good education and also make me a good athlete. I have also gone through the news lately and seen all the sports news about Universities, such as the Arizona Wildcats, that have been accused of paying up-and-coming freshman players to join their teams and organizations, which is not allowed in the NCAA. After hearing accusations of teams paying players it has made me wonder, should colleges or universities be allowed to pay student-athletes to play for them? I personally think that student athletes should not be paid to play because many of these students are already at these schools on scholarships that pay for them to be …show more content…
The first group of people are the ones who say, “Yes! Student-athletes should be paid”, and the two main reasons or opinions they have that make them believe they should be paid. One reason is because many of the division 1 athletes have their names advertised to bring people to games, or images of them are used for products. An example of this is that leading up to March Madness the NCAA will spend millions of dollars of advertising that shows many of the top teams and the students that play for them, and these commercials bring in a lot of revenue from people who decide to watch because of the advertising. He talks about whether or not college athletes should be paid for their duties. Despite the fact college athletes are not professionals, they should most certainly be paid for playing for their respective schools due to many factors. In conclusion, I think student-athletes should get paid for racking up revenue for their universities, the amount of time they spend in their sports, and by paying student-athletes, it may increase their motivation to reach academic success and steer them clear from unsolicited activities. The efforts of student-athletes must be acknowledged because they have given their best effort and countless hours of their time to represent their universities in the best way possible.

The colleges and arenas hosting such events are not doing it solely for the love of sport, they are doing it for the money that will flow generously into their banking accounts. The coaches also, they are not volunteers, they are not there just for their love of the game, coaching is their job. The athletic directors, coaching staff, and event staff are all doing their job to put food on the table. The fans are watching the game, the players, the ones who are making huge sacrifices to be on the court. The athletes are the only ones in this circle of business who are putting in the hours, maybe even the most hours, and not getting a paycheck. It is time for a change, the fans, the players, and the NCAA is ready for it, it just has to be done. However, there are those out there fighting the other side of this battle, saying there is no need for these student athletes to be paid. Both sides have good points but one of them has great points.

The NCAA has strict rules about players receiving benefits from the school in forms of helping players and their families in the form of paychecks or even helping pay bills. College sports bring in an enormous amount of money for the schools every year and are expected to be given nothing in return. Sports do not only bring in money to schools but also more students and fans. They wouldn’t need to get paid for playing sports because they already get their tuition and fees paid for through a full-ride scholarship. So receiving money for playing sports after receiving a scholarship is only spoiling the students. And what they would do with all that extra money is up to them, but most of them would spend it on ridiculous things that they don’t need.
