Should Prisons Rehabilitate

“We believe that when people make mistakes , they deserve the opportunity to remake their lives.” -Barack Obama. Prison should not be to punish but to rehabilitate the criminals. Criminals are getting thrown into prison and not giving the opportunity to change. The society will never get better if the criminals get punished but never taught responsibilities and good life ethics for when they’re released.

The first reason why prisons should be to rehabilitate and not to punish is because it helps the criminals get back on their feet once they are released. This would give them a chance to look into housing and careers for themselves. Rehabilitating them would allow them to work together as inmates to build one another as females or males. The time spent in prison should be for the prisoners to map out a plan of how things should go once they are released. “If criminal justice reforms are to work, experts say, they must be accompanied with policy changes that remove institutional barriers to reentry that stigmatize prisoners once they are released” (Baptiste) …show more content…

Making them productive members of the society can eliminate the crime from being done again. There would be less trouble in the community because they’ve been instructed on how to do things different. It also increases the good behavior and mood of individuals and the population as a whole. “For some prisoners, especially those that have spent years or decades of their lives locked up, getting out comes with a mixture of overwhelming joy and anxiety. That’s why programs that help inmates re-enter society are critical.”
