Should Monsanto continue to work with and produce GMO’s?

As GMOs continue to take the world by storm, up to 80% of America’s processed foods contain GMOs (The Non-GMO Project, 2015), it has become a popular debate as to whether or not they are beneficial. Monsanto is a large company that works on improving agriculture through the use of GMOs (Monsanto, 2015). The main sources of doubt around Monsanto’s use of GMOs are centered around the ethical processes and the effects on the ecosystem and evolution. There are also those who agree with Monsanto and speak of the benefits of GMOs such as better crop production, vitamin rich foods and the reduction of pollution, which creates the controversy surrounding this issue.

Genes can be transferred to an organism through a few different methods. This can be done through a gene gun, plasmids or viruses. Before implementing one of these processes, the DNA must be extracted by denaturing the cell’s structure to release its contents so that the desired gene can then be selected and removed using probes and restriction enzymes.
