Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

To legalize, or not to legalize, that is the question. I am aware that this is not the question formed by Prince Hamlet in the Shakespeare play. However, Americans seem to mimic Hamlet indecisiveness when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. I am from California and although the state flower is not cannabis, it probably should be. Many Californians see nothing wrong with marijuana. As a matter of fact, it was not until I moved to Texas that I realized many people believe marijuana should remain as an illegal drug. There are numbers of people who believe marijuana can be used as a therapeutic medicine for patients with arthritis, many forms of cancer, mental disorders, and many other diseases. I really wish the use marijuana was allowed everywhere, and I think that marijuana should be legalized nationally. One reason marijuana should be legalized is because currently the United States does not have any cases of death that are directly linked to the use of marijuana yet harmful substances, such as tobacco, are sold regularly. Another reason marijuana should be legalized is because a few states already have laws that legalize the medicinal use of marijuana and many states have laws that decriminalize marijuana. It is true that many people argue that marijuana can cause harm, but then why allow the drug to be used in any part of our country? If the complete legalization of marijuana seems unrealistic, there is nothing wrong with legalizing marijuana nationally for medicinal purposes, this would allow patients to receive the same level of care for their illness regardless of where they reside, and the healthcare industry as well as the government can finally receive some of the revenue marijuana brings to our country. One reaso... ... middle of paper ... ...government would certainly get a portion of all sales. Legalizing marijuana is one of the most popular debates in our country. Most arguments come with valid points, such as marijuana being therapeutic and a better choice for legalization, as opposed to tobacco or alcohol. Many states have already decided to allow some form of marijuana use and it makes since that all states should be on the same page. However, there are many who believe that marijuana can be harmful, and for good reason. If marijuana is in the wrong hands, it can be dangerous. While I agree that marijuana can be dangerous, I find the benefits of the drug outweigh the chance of harm. Harm can come any time someone uses drugs on the market without following directions, restrictions, and precautions. With all point considered, I am for the legalization of marijuana and the use of marijuana responsibly
