Marijuana is very controversial topic in today’s society. Marijuana is a psychedelic drug that causes hallucinations. It is the most commonly used recreational drug. The legalization of marijuana is a topic that has been debated by many people; although many experts think that marijuana is harmful, others believe marijuana is very beneficial for people, therefore marijuana has more benefits than and should be legalized. Many people believe that marijuana is not addictive, but “According to the 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 4.3 million Americans were classified with dependence on or abuse of marijuana” (“Marijuana Use”). Not only is marijuana addictive, doctors still do not know all of the things marijuana can do to a patient. Studies have shown that, “Patients react very differently to cannabinoids” (McCarberg) making it very hard for doctors to find accurate data. Even though this shows that marijuana has different effects on different people, it still helps many people fight diseases. Another major point that has been argued for the legalization of marijuana is how it can benefit the economy. Marijuana has many medical benefits, like helping people with terminal disease, such as cancer, cope and better their health, and since it is all natural it is a lot better then painkillers and less addictive. Many would argue that marijuana does have good medical benefits, but it is very addictive and some studies show it has side effects that are worse then its benefits. Studies have shown that Marijuana is less harmful then alcohol and tobacco, which are both already legalized, while other studies have shown that marijuana is more likely to cause cancer then tobacco products. Legalizing marijuana would help boost the economy because less people would be arrested for marijuana possession lowering the number of people in prison and marijuana can be taxed just like taxed like cigarettes and alcohol. It is also argued that taxing marijuana would hurt the economy because the increase of use would multitude the costs that come with marijuana use and it would cost more to produce then it would to grow.
