Cigarettes Should be Banned

930 Words2 Pages

Smoking cigarettes is common among most adults in the United States, yet it is one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. Many people feel that smoking should be made illegal. The reason they may feel this way is because it is very harmful to your health and can lead to death. I strongly agree that cigarettes should be banned from being sold and produced because to me they’re considered a dangerous drug.
The first reason that supports my claim of smoking cigarettes should be banned is that it is a “major cause to preventable and premature deaths”, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. The evidence that supports this reason is that around 443,000 cigarette deaths happen each year in the US only. Yet, some may challenge this piece of evidence because those Mercado2 deaths are caused by the users’ choice to decide to smoke. Opponents claim that smoker have a right to smoke argue that people who are around smokers receive second hand smoke and sometimes get very sick. On one hand it is true that people can choose whether or not to smoke. However, if they begin to smoke it is a very hard habit to kick due to the nicotine, which is an addictive substance. Another reason that advocates for the claim that smoking cigarettes should be banned is the cost to society and the financial burden on the families of smokers themselves. Evidence that supports this reason is annually each year nearly $193 billion spent on smoking. $97 billion for lost production and $96 billion for health costs. (Chew, Norma) This evidence proves that people are sending too much money on cigarettes and hospitals costs. Many smokers get
