The first reason is, if classes start later teens will go to bed later. They will think of it as more time to fool around. First of all, starting school at 9:00 sounds great to me,and it would give me an hour to sleep in. According to the University of Minnesota’s article “The benefits of a late start”, A start time of 8:35 a.m. allows 57-60 percent of students to get eight or more hours of sleep, but schools that begin at 7:30 a.m. have an average of only 34 percent of students sleeping eight or more hours on school nights. If the school would start at 9:00, then teens would get more sleep. They would improve in school, and be more active in a lot of activities.

Teens are supposed to get eight and half hours to nine hours of sleep. Schools’ starting at eight o’clock is absurd. Having teens get up at six or seven o’clock is very unhealthy for the brain. As a high school student it would help me if Broken Arrow Schools started later in the morning so I had time to completely wake up and eat breakfast to get my body going. Research shows that teens naturally go to sleep later and sleep later in the mornings (“Sleep”). Delaying the time school starts by thirty minutes to an hour could show an improvement on health in teens, their grades and morning traffic.
Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
