Some people think that girls should be allowed to play on the same sports team as boys, but I don't think that would be a good thing. The playing levels of girls typically aren't the same as boys, showering would be an issue, and there would be stereotypes that would ruin the game. Putting girls and boys on the same team would be a bad idea. Normally, the playing skills of girls aren't the same as guys. I feel like girls wouldn't want to do as much running and conditioning as guys would be able to. Girls are treated a lot softer when it comes to physical activities. Last year, when I was practicing for basketball, girls didn't do as much conditioning as we did. When it was off-season, the girls were allowed to jog and we got in trouble for
Boys- and more and more girls-who accept Jock Culture values often go on to flourish in a competitive sports environment that requires submission to authority, winning by any means necessary and group cohesion,” says Robert Lipsyte. In Kate Nolan’s article, boys are only allowed to play sports. Kate Nolan mentions, “A lot of people like to justify women’s supporting role in sports media by saying, “Well, they’ve never played the game, so they just aren’t qualified to speak about it.” Women are known to not play football because coaches never give them the chance to try. Another difference is Bill Stowe.
Most schools had physical education classes for girls only; they did not play any kind of sports like they do now. Some educators thought that running and jumping were not very ladylike. They opposed athletic competition for women. Women had to fight for the right to compete. The most likely sport of girls was to compete in sports such as golf, tennis, or swimming.
However, the discrepancy in media coverage is getting better with time. There is a realization of the importance of balanced attention with regard to gender in sports programs. Therefore, there are increased efforts to ensure that several sport programs show women participating in games. This will lead to a better perception of sports by girls. Eventually, girls will change their attitude about sports.
Today more than any other time period, equality has become a hot topic for discussion. One of the major topic is, should women be allowed to compete with men in sports on the same or opposing teams. Due to a lot of differences in physical characteristics, sporting interest, and economic considerations; it’s not a good idea to bring teams consisting of both genders together. To begin with, we have to question whether there’s even a want from the general public for girls being allowed to play on boys’ sports teams. Very few athletes in sports are barely even bothered about the fact women can’t play on male sport teams. If there’s no true desire to combine the teams, it only makes sense to not try a force unneeded change.
Gender equality still lacks to this day with self esteem, no media or scholarships, and also Title IX being infringed on. So I think society should get more evolved and interested in the fact that women do not have equal rights in sports, even after having Title IX. By changing discrimination and inequality in sports it will help with the future generation.
Throughout history, women have had to struggle for equality in all elements of our society, but no where have they had a more difficult time than in the area of athletics. Sports is a right of passage that has always been grafted to boys and men. The time has come for our society to accept women athletes and give them the attention they deserve.
Lots of women were not allowed to play because of their gender. “Passing an entrance exam to morehouse college allowing women to get a good education but can not play on a basketball team” (Davis 3). School’s did not allow women to play because the schools did not think that women are not athletic. “Women were not allowed to play until the 1955 when they let men play” (Davis 4). It is hard for girls because so many people were saying that girls are not athletic as guys are.
Girls on the other hand shun such activities. There has been a link between media coverage and the indulgence of girls in sporting activities in schools. This is primarily because television and other media show sports as a preserve of men.... ... middle of paper ... ...
There are two different viewpoints on this issue. Some people simply think there can be gender integrated sports, while others think gender segregated sports are better. Deborah Brake explains arguments for and against segregated sports teams. Some of the concepts brought up for having gender integrated sports teams is that having separate sports teams would send out a message that women are less than men. Integrated sports teams accommodate both genders and abilities.
Throughout history it is clear that not only women, but both genders have faced seemingly insurmountable barriers when attempting to break into a sport that is not "proper" or stereotypical for their gender to participate in. Though as a society we are making strides towards equality in sport, such as the advent of Title IX, it is clear that we still have a long way to go. Though breakthrough policies such as this are moving in the right direction, other evidence points towards the fact that as a society, we are still more comfortable with women in traditionally female sports such as field hockey as opposed to boxing, and men in traditionally male sports such as body building as opposed to synchronized swimming, since these activities fit with our preconceived notions of what is "normal" for a specific gender. Supporting this idea is the fact that though we seem to be moving towards equality in sport with many coeducational universities and colleges having sport opportunities for both sexes, funding is still extremely unequal, as states by the Women's Sports Foundation in 2001:
Physical prowess, team sports, thats (always been) male turf. (Harris, D, 1987.) The first article that i have looked at is straight from the internet , i have found this article by performing a ‘GOOGLE SEARCH’. I used the search criteria ‘GENDER IN SPORT’. The article that i have found is called ‘GENDER BARRIERS IN SPORT’
...ough they perceive that both gender should be permitted to play all sports, they still feel that selected ones are not appropriate. For instance, football was checked as a sport for male gender and is not appropriate for girls to involve themselves in, and aerobics was taken as a female gender sport inappropriate for males and should not participate in.
Gender in sports has been a controversial issue ever since sports were invented. In the early years, sports were played only by the men, and the women were to sit on the sidelines and watch. This was another area of life exemplifying the sexism of people in which women were not allowed to do something that men could. However, over the last century in particular, things have begun to change.
In summary, Despite opponents argue, fans want to see thunderous dunks and incredible athleticism over the lesser abilities of females, male competitions is more intense and there is more at risk, and male driven associations produce more revenue than female driven associations. It is apparent that male and females are built differently therefore they have different abilities, females go through the same types of events and often have more on the line, and female athletics aren 't given the same recognition or praise. Then, maybe one day female will receive the same amount of pay as their male counterparts. As, Vera Nazarian once implied, “A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.”
Ann, 2007, pg. 57), however this is not true. This mentality causes males to resent the female athletes, thus rendering it even more difficult for them to succeed. Without a shift in gender ideology, females will continue to face adversity, regardless of the amount of change that has occurred over the last 30 years. There does not need to be equality between the genders within sports, however equity must be seen, with the perception of the abilities that female athletes possess not being compared to that of males. This would aid males to not feel as threatened by females participating in sports and physical
