There are so many reasons why people see same-sex marriage as something that is unorthodox and shouldn't be permitted. While marriage is the love and respect two people have with one another and is actually defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary as, "a ceremony in which two people are married to each other" ("Marriage") there are people that don't want others to marry based on the individuals sexual preference. Two people that want to marry should be allowed legally to do so. Out of the 50 states in the United States, only seventeen issue same-sex marriage license. In the song Same Love, by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, they state that there are so many stereotypes on the characteristics of what makes someone gay. Same Love accurately speaks on out on same sex-marriage and acceptance stating how we are all equal with human rights and deserve justice not discrimination or prejudice actions.
According to a 2011 research done by the Williams Institute of Law at UCLA, "3.5% of adults identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender" (Gates). This percentage makes up 9 million of the adults in the US that have identified themselves in the LGBT, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Out of the 50 states in the entire United States, only seventeen allow for the freedom and recognition of same-sex marriage. "An estimated 38% of the US population lives in states where same-sex marriage has been legalized" (Endyke). Those people living in the other 33 states that do not allow freedom to marry the person you want are actually not practicing the equality that is stated in the constitution; ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
The most notable argumentation that people have on why same-sex marriage should...
... middle of paper ...
...ss pause; progress, march on; with the veil over our eye; we turn our back on the cause; when kids are walking 'round the hallway plagued by pain in their heart; a world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are" because it mentions how kids are victimized. (Lewis, Macklemore)
Same love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis speaks on out on same sex-marriage and acceptance stating how we are all equal with human rights and deserve justice not discrimination or prejudice actions. Every person should be allowed to be treated with the same opportunities that everyone else is treated with, especially when it comes to marriage because a homosexual couple deciding that they want to get married isn't affecting the people that are oppose to that lifestyle. People's viewpoints and religion shouldn't determine someone else's future and their chance of being an equal.
Within America’s society today, 3.8 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. With only 17 of the 50 states legalizing and recognizing this type of relationship (“History…”), it puts a stronghold on same-sex couples to publicly declare their love with the promise of marriage. Same-sex marriages should be legalized because everyone has equal rights of freedom and liberty.
Legalizing gay marriage has been a controversial topic in the past few years. In my opinion, gay people should be allowed to get married because it is a civil right. It shouldn 't matter what gender they prefer because they 're still regular people. Making gay marriage illegal, is the same as taking away someone 's freedom and civil rights. That is unethical and completely awful. There 's no harm being done by letting two people who are in love with each other get married. However, many religious fundamentalists are against this and believe gay marriage is wrong and needs to be stopped. Homosexual couples should have the right to get married because it 's a civil right and their sexual preference doesn 't make them any less human.
The two texts examined within, present the opposing extremes of views regarding gay and lesbian marriage. The first text entitled Let Gays Marry by Andrew Sullivan examines the intricacies of same sex relationships and why homosexual couples should be allowed to publicly show affection for one another. The second text that will be examined is titled Leave Marriage Alone written by William Bennett. Bennett gives his views on why couples of same sex nature should not be allowed to engage in marital relations. These two authors, although very different, each has a view of the ideals of marriage, and how it should be presented to the public.
In the video, gay marriage is seen as the root of destruction for building a family. People are scared of things that have not been normalized in society, and having same-sex marriage destroys the foundation of a nuclear family. However, to gays and lesbians, anyone in love with each other can build a family even with adoption. In the article, Priya Kandaswamy believes that marriage is not based on love, but “a legal institution that is fundamentally about preserving property relations.” Marriage does not any sexuality from loving or expressing affection to one another. However, it does affect whether or not their spouse or family will inherit or retain family wealth. Homosexuality is also intersecting with race. In the video, homosexuals wanted to be considered as a minority group; however, this would put them under the Civil Rights Act which was made possible by the colored community. People of color do not agree with having homosexuality as an individual group because it will then grant all sexuality the rights within the Civil Rights Act, making it null and meaningless. Homosexuality does not also follow the three requirements to be considered a minority group: immutable characteristics, financial discrimination, and political weakness. In the article, sexuality can be seen intersecting with gender and race as stated by Marlon Bailey, “not
As an American citizen, a person should be entitled to marry whoever they choose, regardless of gender or sexual preference. Gay marriage is something that some people consider to be taboo while other people are very supportive of it; I am one of the latter. The ability to marry someone is a basic human right and it should not be taken away from someone because they love a person of the same gender. One of the main reasons that gay marriage is illegal in the United States is because of what the Bible says about it, regardless of the fact that the first Amendment of the US Constitution says that there is to be a separation between church and state. Approximately three point eight percent of the United States population is made up of people
A large majority of people in the United States will say that they are in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. They will all agree that homosexuals should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law, and other rights granted to US citizens. However, when the topic of marriage arises, all the talk of equality ceases. Over fifty percent of all people in the United States oppose homosexual marriage, despite the fact that most are otherwise supportive of homosexual rights. This means that many of the same people who are even passionately in favor of homosexual rights oppose homosexuals on this one issue. This is because there is a lot of misunderstanding about what homosexuality really is, as well as the erroneous assumption that homosexual people enjoy the same civil rights protections as everyone else. For the reasons of ending social injustice, the economic and social benefits of allowing homosexuals to marry, and the constitution, homosexual marriages should be a legalized institution.
... gay marriage should not be as controversial of a topic then it is. Even though there are religious thoughts about gay marriage and homosexuality, people are getting that information from books that were written millions of years ago and they are not even sure of who wrote them. Even though people are ultimately afraid of the unknown and change, both, which are included in legalizing gay marriage. I believe that people should brush up on their knowledge of homosexuality, gay marriage, and what gay marriage would do to our society before they make create an opinion about the matter; which could ultimately affect the opinion of people around them. I also believe that love is love no matter what way you think of it, we are all humans who just want the same rights for everyone. Imagine if you were in a gay persons shoes, would you think the same way about gay marriage?
Macklamore and Ryan Lewis’s music supports a lot of different things. They rap about lots of things. They could always stick to the status quote and rap about money, girls and fame but instead they choose to write their music about topics that actually matter to Americans. Macklamore, and Ryan Lewis’s music has up bringing beats about human rights and wanting to see people equal. Although he sees every human being as being equal, his mission through his writing and singing is to have people change their point of view and to have the government change their laws to allow two people of the same-sex, two women, or two men to get married.
He felt personally attacked by these assumptions as a young child and speaks about it in his song: “When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay/‘cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight” (Macklemore Ln 1-2). There are a couple of prejudices in these lyrics. He is giving you the idea that men who like art are thought of as gay and that men who do things that are associated with women tendencies, such as keeping their room straight, are also gay. These are a few examples of how people typically try to identify a gay man. He continued these lyrics with “…bunch of stereotypes all in my head/a preconceived idea of what it all meant/for those that liked the same sex/had the characteristics” (Macklemore Ln 6,8-10). He is explaining here that society believes that gay people have certain characteristics that make them who they are. It is this kind of judgment that makes people not want to be linked to these stereotypes. With imagery, he shows a father and son playing football happily in their front yard. This is the normal idea of what a boy should grow up doing. He also shows two young girls playing with dolls which is another idea of gender roles. If someone sees a boy playing with a doll, they are likely to think it is wrong because society thinks that that would make them gay and that that is not right. In “Same Love” Macklemore
... Society needs to reevaluate the definition of love and the fact that all humans are created equal and should be able to love whomever they want to. There needs to be more laws and support for same-sex couples and gay marriage. Laws should be made to protect those who choose to love the person of the same-sex, and no discrimination against gays. Judging same-sex marriages should never be acceptable when including: health concerns, adoption, living conditions, job opportunities, ECT... Everyone should be able to love whoever they want and never let anything get into the way of that. In today’s society some people can't be with the person they truly love, because it is not society acceptable in most areas and it is too much of a struggle live like that on a daily basis. The world needs to open their eyes and realize that this is not acceptable under any circumstances.
Same-sex couples should be allowed to publicly celebrate their commitment in the same way as heterosexual couples. It should be legal because the gay community should have the same rights as everyone else does. Many argue that same-sex couples should have the ability as to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that banning gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. People opposing gay marriage say, “We must protect traditional marriage and the traditional family.” Matthew McTighe of the Mainers United for Marriage debates responds by saying, “Prote...
Gay and lesbian unions have been for a long time a subject that no one liked to discuss. For the last few decades, gays and lesbians have come out and expressed their sexuality preferences. Many believe that same sex marriage should not be legalized because it's against the moral. It's against the definition of marriage, which is considered as the union of a man and a woman as a husband and wife. Same sex marriage should be legalized because the way society views the union of lesbian and gays can a change. Another reason why same sex marriage should be legalized is that children that are issued from a gay or lesbian couple will be loved and raised in a family that is legally recognized under the law. Lesbians and gays also deserve to have the same rights as heterosexuals.
There are many opponents of gay people as it is, and they all have their reasons to dislike the idea of permitting them get married. One of the main reasons is that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation. Because gay couples are unable to have children, they should not be allowed to marry (Schiffen 495). Another main argument is that the word marriage means the union of one man and one woman. This is a long-standing theme of most major Western religions. Under a proposed bill known as the Defense of Marriage act, marriage is defined as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” Furthermore, it defines a spouse as “ a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or wife” (What 1). Under these guidelines, it is quite obvious that gay couples would not be eligible for marriage. People against homosexual marriage also say that it is a person’s choice to be gay. Since the individual chooses to be a homosexual, they should not be given special privileges. Another argument that you hear is that these couples should not get married simply because of the torment and ridicule they would be faced with in their everyday lives. There are news reports from across America telling about how a gay person was beaten or killed just because they were looked at as different. Some of these people would end up the target of verbal abuse and maybe even physical abuse, just because some heterosexual people see them as different.
Marriage is the joining of a man and a woman, who loves one another and wants to spend the rest of their lives together. It is not the joining of two women or two men and I do not believe the society our or U.S. government redefine the true meaning of marriage. I am against same sex marriage because of the following several reasons. Gay marriages are unacceptable in my opinion because it goes against God’s words. God’s word is the truth and no one can change it.
Marriage is just one way for two people to show their love for another. Whether it is two men, two women, or a man and a woman, love is love. People against gay marriage do not have the right to deny people of showing their love for one another. Everyone deserves the same rights as Americans and also just as people. The United States of America promotes freedom, liberty, and justice for all people. Same-sex couples are many times not included when it comes to marriage rights.
