The value of a higher education has been seeming to get better every day. But, is it worth it to go to the College? Two articles, “My View: Should everyone go to College” by Mike Rose and “What Value Really Means in Higher Education” by Karen Lawrence, strives to discuss on higher education and how it has affected the economy after the recession. Lawrence attempts to define the value of the College. While, Rose’s article describes the advantages of the College through his personal life, emotional empathy, and by the statistics that appeals to the reader’s logic. Both Rose and Lawrence ethos weight evenly with their credibility. Giving their intended audience their view regarding the debate. Lawrence uses her logic throughout her writing by saying that many jobs that exist today will not exist in five years, and many that will exist in five, 10, or 20 years have yet to be invented (Lawrence). The way Lawrence talks with her logic does not motivate people to attend college. Credible Rose uses logos by saying that, according to data from the National Center for Educational Statistics, people with a college degree, on average, will earn significantly more over a lifetime than people without a degree. And the benefit increases with education beyond the baccalaureate (Rose). This type of information dealing with statistics is great for supporting argument. Then he ends his article with “both the bucolic college on a hill and the urban occupational program operate without the production pressure of a job and with systematic feedback on performance - which increases the possibility of discovering new areas of talent and interest” (Rose). Use of logic in Rose’s article certainly is rational and effective in achieving its goal than Lawrence’s logic by using statistics and evidence in the …show more content…

But Lawrence does not use much pathos or emotions. Lawrence uses pathos by saying you should expect more from the College education like when she says, “With this in mind, I believe the central goal of higher-education institutions such Sarah Lawrence College must be to graduate “world-ready” critical thinkers with the capacity to acquire new skills and adapt to a fast-changing landscape—who can put their learning to work in the world, both immediately and 50 years down the line” (Lawrence). Rose started his article by saying College changed my life (Rose). Then he talks about being an average student through elementary school and drifting through high school until when his English teacher got him into a small local College on probation. Also, said, “Luckily encountered some new mentors and eventually found my way” (Rose). This kind of personal story makes audience emotional and they like to hear something that they can connect to their personal life. He uses personal emotions effectively connects hit to his audience who might be going through the similar emotions. Also, Rose awakens interest in his audience by stating that people with a college degree, on average, will earn significantly more over a lifetime than people without a degree (Rose).
