Electronic Cigarettes are a rapidly expanding market with a considerable amount of growth potential. “The U.S. sales have escalated from 50,000 devices in 2008 to 3.5 million in 2012” (Wahba). “The U.S. sales are projected to increase by 24.2% annually through 2018” (Fillon). Is this blossoming market actually helping with smoking cessation efforts, or is it just another way for tobacco companies to make money? Several tobacco companies have started to sell these electronic nicotine delivery devices, as they can be used in places where traditional cigarettes have been banned. According to the CDC, there has been a dramatic increase in e-cigarette related calls to poison control. The proportion of e-cigarette calls to the poison control hotline jumped from less than one percent in September 2010 to over forty percent in February 2014. Poisoning from conventional cigarettes is usually the result of young children eating them; however, poisoning from e-cigarettes involves the liquid that is put inside the devices. This poisoning can occur in three different ways: by ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin or eyes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This means that poisoning is more probable through electronic cigarettes than traditional cigarettes and poisoning can easily occur to adults, as well as children. The poisoning is not just due to children eating the product; it can be due to spills or accidentally swallowing the liquid during inhalation. They deliver aerosolized nicotine and kid-friendly additives; such as chocolate mint, pina colada, atomic fireball candy, and even gummy bears “ (Fillon). These types of flavorings and marketing specific to kids have been banned in tobacco products because of its appeal to children, therefore shouldn’t it be banned in all nicotine products? Stanton A. Glantz, Ph.D., director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco says, “There is no question that e-cigarettes are the way that some kids initiate nicotine addiction”. Nicotine use during adolescence “might have lasting adverse consequences for Brain development, causes addiction, and might lead to sustained use of tobacco products” (Fillon). These statements show that electronic cigarettes pose a threat to the health of children. Not only can electronic cigarettes harm the children who are using them, they can harm any children that are subjected to the vapor from them.
