Should College Athletes be Paid?

One of the most debated topics in the world of sports today is whether or not college athletes should be paid to play. The over $800M income of the NCAA is a very large number. A quick and uneducated response to a number this large prompts people to feel there should be enough to spread around; particularly to the athletes that people are paying to see. Proponents of the pay for play viewpoint feel that the efforts exerted by college athletes while competing warrants a respectable salary. Opponents typically are of the opinion that athlete scholarships with allowances for food and lodging supply more than enough compensation.
A scholarship completely pays a student-athlete’s tuition. The athletes do not have to pay a single penny. College tuition costs thousands of dollars. “The average value of a full scholarship at an in-state, public school is $15,000 a year. For an out-of-state public school, the average value is $25,000 a year. Full scholarships at private schools average $35,000 a year” (NCAA). Receiving scholarship money to put toward paying school expenses is similar to receiving a salary. The amount these student-athletes are being “paid” is almost as much as the national income average for adults. “The national average wage index for 2012 is 44,321.67” (SSA). The student-athletes are housed in dormitories. They have plenty of room. They are comfortable. The students awarded scholarships do not have to make any sort of lease or rent payments in order to live in the dormitories. The student-athletes have access to free medical care whenever they want. If they have a sports-related injury, cold, headache, or even a bruise, they can see a physician instantly for free. Money for food is also included in a sc...
